Feedback on the latest Sensor Overlay changes

Greetings Capsuleers!

We have made some small changes to the Sensor Overlay for the next scheduled release (EVE 13.04) which is available to test on Singularity today.
The feedback we took from our last release was collected up, and we have made some changes to the following:


  • A less obtrusive experience.

We have toned down the sensor sweep that appears in the game, and shortened the time that it is active from 12 seconds to 8 seconds. Further scans in the same system will no longer show the sweep in scene, but just on the compass instead.


  • Turning off the sensor overlay now means just that.

Instead of the "Hide/Show" option before, it is now changed to be On/Off. Setting this to off will always disable the sky-box sweeps that appear on undocking or jumping systems.
Additionally when turned off, the compass will become much more transparent as to not be in your way.


  • Smaller brackets for sensor overlay locations.

The brackets for locations (anomalies, signatures etc.) have been made smaller and lightweight. They still use the same color scheme.


  • New Settings Menu

A newer settings menu should allow for easier connection with the icons in the skybox. We have also added the tooltip shortcut (Did you know: Control+O by default toggles the overlay on and off?). The hide/show eye icon is now a toggleable switch for On/Off and is much easier to see and use.

Feedback on the changes above is welcome, as is further feedback on the sensor overlay in general. Thank you for trying it out on Singularity!

Known Issues:

  • The icons in the settings tooltip are not toggleable at the moment like the rest of the text is, this is a defect and will be fixed shortly.

Can you also please tone down the brightness of the tactical overlay spheres? I seem to spend half my EVE time changing the view angle to find a part of space that isn't too bright.

In the new popup box for the overlay options (upon mousing over the compass), the symbols for the different locations aren't part of the hitbox for the button that toggles them, and they should be, at least in my opinion.

Also, can we hope for a touch up on the tactical overlay, as mentioned above? It can be a bit too obtrusive, and I feel it could benefit from adding a gradient to the central plane, like the spheres have.

Other than that, everything looks good, at least as far as I can see after 30 minutes on SiSi.

I should have wrote down the issue with the hitboxes, I found this in testing and it's being fixed.

The tactical overlay is obviously a different beast altogether, but I will try and raise the concerns up and suggest some more immediate fixes to the gradients, and see if we can do that to alleviate user pain when using it for now.

That's a bit ugly. But as it appears that the glow effect got killed by the new UI, this is the workaround to at least differentiate between visible and hidden bookmarks in the sensor overlay?

Is there any chance for an option in settings to allow each user to increase/decrease a slider to pick a size they perfer?

There are some systems that have 100 sigs/anomalies where a smaller size would be wonderful, but in other cases where there are fewer having larger icons would be preferred in my opinion.

A user selection in options or even better via the sensor overlay area would be fantastic for user experience/choice.

Nooooo. I loved that sensor sweep. why did you do that???

Just make it an option for people who dont want it. stop listening to pvpers at the expense of those of us that like immersion, or we'll end up going to other sci fi games that are better at "keeping it real" That's not a threat, just an observation.

As the player base gets older, they will have less time for a full time game like combat EVE, so leave us something to hold onto when we have to get on solo in the late hours.

Ok whatever, I guess i don't feel that strongly about it but....

I agree completely, I love seeing the overlay, and I am not fan of making it so it appeals only to one type of people. Could you make a simple option to leave it as it is on tranquility, while for those who doesn't want it at certain times allow to disable ?

I've always had to angle away from the sun or obstruct it with something on field

That's the background, environment that is to bright.

We simply need darker space.

Look up, as in the game room up (the is no up in real space) and it looks like someone left the ceiling lights on. Look down and it's dark.

To many systems, anons, etc are way to bight.

Posted before, will be ignored again.

very good post ccp paradox, one of my biggest gripes with the ui solved! thank you

that leaves now for the rest of the ui team
- jump animation / camera animation *why does it spin my camera around, i dont like it neusa..
- camera animations in general switched off, when i press c i would just like it to be instant, im not making a movie
- and yeah the biggest one tactical overlay lol (situational awareness welp, its a pseudo 60o fov)
- module activation.. why on earth does it cycle then blink red... sigh hell blinking green is annoying too!

I feel like the Sensor Overlay black rectangle box is too big. Option to resize or make it smaller by default? No reason for it to take that much space.

Really neat but I don't like at all that it's an options menu in a tooltip. It would be better either in the people and places window or the system scanner.

It's also very very large. You might want to regularly check on your shield or capacitor in combat but everytime you do you scroll over the nav rose and that gigantonormous tooltip shows up.

So technically you've done some really nice work (again) but again...

The main problem is that Eve still uses white text without drop shaddows but transparent background
Come on guys, you can do better than this!
(That last image doesn't even have an overly bright background - just a single bubble and it already makes the text hard to read)

Can we please get an option to double click an anomaly in the probe scanner to focus our tracking camera onto that anomaly? It would make locating them visually much easier as well as seeing if the anomaly is occupied or not.

I like the new brackets, they are much less obtrusive, but a little bit harder to find in space (which I am fine with if we can focus through)

Subsequent scans remove the effect? I liked the effect, why remove? I thought this was a cool immersive feature, what tiny minority group is offended by this that you need to "fix" it?

I would prefer leaving the default as is, but then having 3 toggle states: default, reduced, none

Exactly, good idea. I agree it shouldn't be removed completely, the effects add a lot of immersion and feel quite refreshing when flying around. Having it only once after jump mostly I don't even get to see it cause of getting into warp again.

"Less obtrusive"? That box thing is massive now...

"as to not be in your way"....umm, it still pushes everything away from the center, causing the hud to take up much more room than it did before...so its still in our way.

"smaller brackets" Yays, something that finally actually improves usability and functionality and doesn't eat up all remaining screen real estate.
