I have seen CCP is reworking the icons in Overview and Space (http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/ui-modernization-icon-strategy/)

This is awesome, I have waited years for this thank you CCP!

But dear CCP while you are on it, please make the information you can recieve in space detailed enough so you can actually do completely WITHOUT OVERVIEW.

Please give us all information you get from Overview in space too

E.g to have an icon for cruiser and battleship is nice but I need to know the shiptype.

Like it is implemented now you can see text describing shiptype,name and corp tickers in space but only for the selected ship. Having an option to show this text for all ships on grid would be a quick improvement.

I just want to let you know that there is at least one player who wants to do pvp with overview closed, thx for reading

I'd expect to see them with the new structures, that's just me since they included structures as a thing they would give an icon for.

I was just thinking of this... or at least something along the same lines.

So I suggest:

Make ship icons color coded by race first.

So:
Gallente = Green
Caldari = Blue
Amarr = Gold
Minmatar = Red

Then,

Make the bracket icons miniature images of the ship they represent, like OP suggests. I mean only the in-space brackets, not the overview icons. In the overview, there's not enough space to show a small picture of a ship, so they would have to remain simple arrows, still color coded.

So a Vexor's bracket would show a little miniature image of the shape of a Vexor, from profile, colored Gallente green.

Once you zoomed in close enough, these images would fade away, or shrink to be tiny.
