Before I start please save your time by not asking for my gear/isk. I love EVE and I have 3 accounts. These last expansions have exceeded my two computers ability to play eve comfortably. My laptop kept crashing even though it is less than 3 years old. (I traded with a good friend and solved that problem with hers.)

Now my desktop cannot run two accounts at once with lagging so bad it makes EVE no fun to play. No I am not asking for EVE to run on a commodore 64, but yes my 8mb 3200 amd card tri core should handle EVE with no problems. Frankly if you are really are looking at stunning visual games . Usually you are attracted to the “paddle jockey “games like “Call of Duty, dust 514 etc etc. Eve always to me was a thinking person’s game with moments of MVSAP. (Mindless Violence Solves All Problems.)

Being a married person I already take enough wife agro spending 50 bucks a month on this game. There is no way I can say hey I need to fork over 500 bucks for another machine. What I will be soon forced to do is quit plying EVE, pocket the 50 bills for a year and then come back. Now CCP be warned I might not comeback.

So here is an idea. EVE online pledges to lower the CPU requirement yet still provide the same fine product. I look at the obvious graphics hogs. The rocks. (The Doctor Who tunnel jump that looks cool for the first 10 time but who cares after that.) Maybe some IT guy can figure a third option for super performance for graphics. (Dumping the Dr who jump gates, uber details on the roids.) Maybe some target offers for new graphics cards with a big discount because eve (as a large company) buys them in bulk. I don t know. But I do know the answer is not me buying a new machine every 2 years because some whiz kid comes up so cool looking window dressing. (Eve player for 4 years and yes I am an alt duh! )

While I sympathize... even you have recognize that no hobby on the planet is without its "upgrade/replacement maintenance"... especially ones that involve technology.

Hell... my telescope (something that you would think wouldn't require "upgrades") requires a new lens or filter every once in awhile due to damage sustained from traveling (it happens). And that **** ain't cheap.

Carpentry? You can take care of your tools as best you can... but every so often one of them will "die" and you have to get a replacement.

Cars? Oil changes... tune ups... fuel cleaners... you can do all that but eventually the car will break down and you have a choice between either "fixing it" or "replacing it."

Computers are no different. They have life spans. And technology will keep marching forward.

Personally... I'm saving up money to completely rebuild my computer (and "future-proof" it) by limiting myself to one restaurant a month and $40 from each paycheck... that's ~$55 a month... ~$660 a year... ~$1320 over two years. I'm halfway to my goal.

Methinks you are going to have to make judgement calls regarding your finances and prioritize what you can and cannot get away with.
Could you play EVE with only 1 account? That would save ~$30 a month (~$360 a year) right there.
Could you pocket some "change" after each paycheck? Even $20 a month would get you $240 at the end of the year.
Could you limit how often you (personally) eat out? In my experience, this is usually the biggest money sink and can save lots of money in the long run.

I played eve for years on a 15" laptop with barely 3.0 shaders on it, and € 10.95 (12-month-plan) not $50 a month, you have priority issues Cool

Eve online is :

A) mining simulator B) glorified chatroom C) spreadsheets online

D) CCP Games Pay to Win at skill leveling, with instant gratification

It really should, in fact I'm a bit stunned that it doesn't. I'd ask you if you have reduced your graphics settings but that might come off as insulting. Perhaps there is a bug in your system specs somewhere. I know EVE isn't the best at memory allocation but it's not THAT bad that I'm aware of. Either that or it's just strangely compatible with 5 year old laptops that don't have graphics cards.

Main machine:
Old Pentium 4 (2 core) 3 GHz, Ubuntu 14, 4GB RAM, GT 630 on a 1920 x 1080 24" screen, I am getting 45 - 60 FPS most of the time.
I can run on full settings until I am in a blob and two fleets are on field. Drop all settings to lowest and it becomes a grey area between server and system lag, which is hardly noticeable until TiDi kicks in.

Now if I could just have a fast toggle between two groups of settings .... Smile

Don't try to future proof a computer too much, youll overpay. Better to upgrade individual parts at a regular rate, usually yearly, youll save a lot more money that way. I would rather spend money on a new graphics card yearly than have two extra accounts.

Laptops are the most expensive option for gamers because you have to replace the whole darn thing every 3 years to keep up

Build your own, OP, ill bet it will cost less than you think. ($350-500? - thats 7 months of your ridiculously large account collection sub fees) adding with that the time you probably spend on all of those accounts you could probably take a part time job and pay for it faster.

Remember, dont spread your heatsink paste with your finger and make sure you have standoffs installed if you buy a cheap case.

And you can often find free cases anywhere - they dont exactly wear out or go obsolete.

I will say that for every sub Eve loses due to graphics upgrades, they will gain about 2 new players and PC building hobby will gain a new hobbyist. (honestly the old graphics looked really silly to me back when eve was first released, i wouldnt play it, I chose Day of Defeat and Half Life for my PvP)

The best way to future proof your computer is to make sure it has a lot of upgrade slots. This is actually a really good time to do it, too, as all of the ancient slot types are finally going obsolete, so if you get all fresh modern slot types, you can expect them to last for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if I managed my next computer under $500 yet able to last over 20 years. But I can definitely make it last 10 years.

Yeah the case is important for future proofing as is the mobo, nothing worse than having to replace a faulty cheap mobo (have to unplug EVERYTHING) or having to upgrade the mobo, or trying to upgrade something else and hitting limitations from the mobo.

maybe it can be fixed.. define crash? does the system power off while playing? bsod? eve closes to desktop? if it's suddunly changed, and the specs have not changed, then its most likly a peice of hardware is breaking, or a new feature you are using is choking it. like turn off the gods rays and things in belts.

But a better definition of crash would help figure this out.

and they don;t need to reduce anything, they have not changed the specs, so again define crash

you did some very very poor comparisons, most of what you listed make money or something like a car is required inorder to get to a job.

I however have encountered this as ive quit playing on my desktop due to only in eve does it lock up, and my laptop has lost its ability and struggles on low graphics. I bought a 1k laptop for school and use that now and when im done eventually ill build a new desktop assuming I get a desk to put it on first.

There are many, many, many people that have jobs but don't have a car. Two words, public transportation. These ideas of public transportation, bicycles, and even walking to work, are wildly popular throughout the world. A car is a luxury and convienence that can be lived without. You want a good way to save money, if you have public transportation available or live within 20 miles of your work, try not driving. Take the public transportation or ride a bike. Hell, in most large cities, it takes less time to bike across town during rush hour than it does to drive.

As far as playing on lowend systems goes, when I log on at work my laptop is a dual core 1.6GHz proc, 4GB RAM, and onboard video running whineblows 8.1 (shudder). Turning graphics all the way down allows me to run 2 accounts, and I could probably run 3, but the interweb speed here at work won't support 3. This laptop cost me US$120 from the pawn shop. If your desktop has worse specs than this, you're about ten years overdue to upgrade your box. If your specs aren't worse than this, and you can't run EvE, then you have other problems with your box.

Getting alot of statements and questions how am I spending 50 on two accounts. Well I have three accounts that cost 43 a month every month. A three month subscription for 1 Then next month another. Then next month the third. So I spend around 500 a year. Irronically I am getting a new machine for work : ) in 90 days so I hope for the best.

Also I don t how to say this but I spend 43 a month for entertainment is ok with me. Again I am not asking to have EVE run on a commadore 64, but this new data expansion for window dressing has to stop! ( yes I am not a PC guru, but should I have to be to play EVE? ) FYI all my settings are running a min settings!

I have read a third party website that has calculated EVE has lost 18% of their Subscription base! Who know if that is true or not? All I can say is 70% of the people I was with have moved off EVE in the last year. Frankly they threw up their hands on the High sec mining buff and said door. Hard to believe, but some people were just happy to mine and be friendly. But when they saw that 40% reduction in their refine ORE it was too much! It hurt their pride and frankly do not want to have to move to NULL and listen to some teen/twenty something bellowing orders just to get a better yield for their ORE! They and I have enough bosses in real life and if you think I will pay to have more to play game? Well good night!

Not so sure about this forcing pilots to join up idea. I miss the old day when one pilot could do sites. ( No damn warping cans! ) Did not need a mob of 4 + to capture the warping cans. Hoodlems had to live withtheir ganking and not get GOLD TAGS for free security improvements! Bah, I am ranting. Fly safe! Just a guy who wants to enjoy eve again. Before the CSM had CCP's ear!

I am sorry that your friends cannot into maths, but the hi sec mining yield was not changed, and it's more profitable to mine in hi-sec than it has ever been

Try and explain it to them in simple terms

you are suddenl taxed at 50% this feels awfu!l Sad
but at the same time your salary is doubled! Lol

at the end of the week your paycheck is exactly the same size Straight

you are not worse off because some numbers on the refining screen are different

all that matters is the number of units of minerals that you can mine in a given time

this has not significantly changed

If you think it will help, make sure to have some cookies to hand. Designate one friend "before": give him one cookie. Designate the other friend "after" and give him two cookies, then take one back.

Then everyone eats a cookie

There will always be an argument as to how much backwards compatibility should be maintained by a company whose product is used by online subscribers for hopefully many years.

I started EVE as a MAC user and the old upgrades almost always meant a week or two of no access until they got around to fixing the MAC bugs.

My solution was to not upgrade for the first couple of weeks, that of course is no longer an option. The new more frequent upgrades inspired me to buy a cheapo ACER laptop, which runs EVE quite well, to my great surprise and pleasure.

My MacBook AIR can not even load EVE which boggles my mind.

I would like the devs to prioritize thinking about keeping long time subscribers ability to play even if they do not have bleeding edge technology with an eye on backwards compatibility. Perhaps CCP could publish a list of low end computer "fits" that will still work with each new step forward in glitzy releases that happen so often now.

Logging in requires new patches seemingly on a daily basis and that also reduces the enjoyment that immersing in the EVE gaming experience should be. In this case less might be more CCP.

The fact that EVE is running on a cheapo ACER laptop means they are doing something very right with the upgrades path, the fact that so many people are having trouble keeping the game going on their computers tells me something is not going so well with how a lot of people have their computers set up to play EVE.

That is a potential huge problem for CCP that "fits" could address with each release.
Just a thought because not everyone can or should have to buy a cheapo ACER laptop to keep playing EVE.

Hard to judge from a distance, i can dual on a 5 year old computer with the fan going makign alot of noice. U can change alit of settings too less, also brackets off and such. U complain every 2 years u need to upgrade, but if ccp doesnt others will complain its time to get with the program. Clean your comp, and reinstall windows every year, helps immense. Close virusscanner while playing and other things u dont need , and u shoudl be ok. Reinstall windows helps
