Heavy Assault Missiles and engagement ranges

Needing a little assistance here if someone would care to explain things a bit: I have a ship fit up for pvp and it uses HAM's. I also have a medium neut as well.

  • What ranges should I be engaging at since my neut can hit out to 12.6km and my faction ammo alows me to hit into faction disruptor range?

  • Should I always be fighting in my neut range, except when trying to de-agress?

  • I know HAM's are considered close-range, but should I literally be orbiting my targets at like 10km or will I want to stay near max range? I imagine that the target and their weapon system will help dictate this: Blaster Proteus will hurt at closer ranges, so naturally skirt around my max.

Is this thinking correct or is there something I'm missing here?

Yeah, experience.

it depends on what you're engaging,
blaster fit brawler, keep it at range,
kiting sissy, get on top of it.
Bigger than you, get under it's guns

Lots and lots of variables, what's your ship?

Like you said, it changes given the situation. If it's a short range blast boat you want to keep it at max range since you're not going to be able to neut out a blast ship with 1 neut.

Laser boats will match your range so might as well put neut pressure on them and get in close

other missile boats, doesn't really make a difference.

droneboats, doesn't make a difference

projectiles, get range and force them to use barrage.

doubt you will fit a medium neut and ham's on an orthorus and have a decent anything else.. but I could be wrong.. probably a sac or Tengu or legion..
I would say stay at the edge of your neut range.. will keep you out of normal scram range so you can run if you need to.

... What next ??

He mentioned that faction Ammo hits into Faction point range. So, it wouldn't be a Sac or Legion would it?

Also yeah your right. An Orthrus with a Medium neut tends to not have a tank. =P

HAM Orthrus can fit a medium neut along with dual LSE easily

Don't get it in your head that you need to fight your ship a certain way every time, as other people have said it depends on what you're up against and in what situation. Personally, I would view the neut as what it is on a HAM boat, a supplementary bonus to your launchers. Figure out the best way to do damage without taking any more than you have too, and then see if the neut fits into that plan. It is unlikely that a single neut will tip the scales in your favor if you have to get into blaster/AC range to use it, thereby taking avoidable damage, so work your strengths first. (This was a bit of a disjointed post, I'm distracted, but you get the point)

That neut is not a primary weapon. Think of it as a defence against things you have trouble shaking of of you.

Think of HAMs like short range guns. It may be possible to kite but they work better at brawling, so scram+web would be better suited for them.

No

  • That maximum range is a double edged sword. You cannot treat the maximum range of missiles as a constand like on a turret, it doesn't work that way.
Imagine you are chasing someone and your opponent is running away from you.

Since you both are moving, missiles will have a much shorter range than the maximum value because they need to accelerate and get there first, which cost flight time.
You can estimate that with the exception of the Orthrus, a maximum of 30km for a HAM Sacrilege will be closer to 18km or shorter that's why you want to pin what you shoot.

That maximum range only applys if you and the target are not moving at all.

This is the law of ship progression!

With the whole range part, I've flown a Sacrilege with HAM's at a range of 29 km...

Well, they suck less than heavy missiles...
