Ok newbie question. High sec, Jita or similar type region dumb question.

so for example:
I am in a small corp fleet traveling, mining whatever. Some 1 in fleet gets attacked, others may or may not be in system.
NOT at war with anyone. Can the others attack the pod of the ganker? and not get concord attacked? or is it limited to person that got ship ganked?

also since most of these gankers are newbie corps, or default corps. why can other members loot can and not get shot by concord?

thanks be nice If I can understand all the rules of PVP in eve.

I searched for this but could not find this answer....

Yes, anyone with a criminal or suspect flag can be freely engaged by anyone without CONCORD interference.

so a newbie corp member loots your can but did not shoot you gets flagged? sorry I know these are dumb questions but I want to be sure.

thanks!

They get a suspect flag, enabling everyone to shoot at them for the next 15 minutes without Concord interfering. Of course, some people do that deliberately to bait you into a fight.

Safest solution: Safety Green > Press F1

If you see someone as flashing yellow or flashing red you can engage them.

So long as you haven't modified your overview to some funky colour system then this applies :p

thanks, so each corp member has to commit a bad act to get flagged, and the flag is temporary right?

Yes, also you get flagged suspect if you rep/sensor boost any fleet member while they're engaged in combat. If a fleet member has suspect status and it is attacked in high sec you can not shoot the attacker without Concord intervention unless the attacker is also suspect.

Yep, anyone looting a can that is not theirs (yellow) or abandoned (blue) gets a suspect flag; your own cans show as white on the overview, you can take from those and cans that show as blue without gaining a flag.

There is a catch though, as admiral root points out some people go suspect in the hopes of getting a fight, one that will 99 times out of 100 end in you exploding. If you're missioning or mining your ships are no match for a PvP ship. (see "Chapter 4 - Verse 1: Thou shalt acquire aggression" of this article for a colourful breakdown of how it works)

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Yes and no.

They have to commit an action that will get them temporarily flagged suspect/criminal.

If you are not fleeted with them then looting your wreck/flipping your can etc sets them to temporarily suspect (yellow).

If you are fleeted with them while they cannot shoot you without going suspect (unless corp friendly fire is on) they can loot your wrecks/cans etc without going suspect if I recall correctly. It's part of the mechanics of being in fleet although they must be on grid when the wreck is created or can dropped for it to be white to them instead of yellow.
