1. Do I pick a low sec system currently "owned" by Caldari?
Go to Hasmijaala

2. Should I pick one that is less contested so that the home station is likely to remain in Caldari hands? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Go to Hasmijaala

3. Can I find one with a vibrant market for T1 ships and T2 modules? I would rather buy atrons and incursus frigs from my station than black frog them in if possible.
Go to Hasmijaala

On mechanics:

1. Once I enlist in FW would I likely see mostly blue pilots in and around the home station?
Yes

2. Do FW enemies (red) camp the stations?
No

3. Do neutral (pirates) saturate these system killing FW pilots of both sides?
Yes

4. Will FW blue kill other blues when they feel like it?
blue on blue isnt much of a problem, but sometimes stuff happens (ask some Templis people about when i get drunk)

On security status (I have sec status 5 on all my characters, so I know nothing about going negative):

1. Does defending myself from a non FW neutral constitute sec status loss?
No

2. Do gate guns fire on people in low sec with low sec status?
No

3. Does initiating an attack on a FW neutral cause sec status loss?
Yes , unless they are pirate

4. Do FW corps frown on a pirate level (-10) sec status? I don't want to mess up chances in joining on in a couple of months.
No

On joining fleets:

1. Do I just look for a public fleet using fleet finder? Yes

2. Do I need to ask permission to join (etiquette) No

3. Do I introduce myself when I join the fleet. Not necessary

4. Do I just warp to fleet members to find where they are? I'd ask before blindly warping to a fleet member, beware of fleetwarp sujarento

5. Is there a TS setup for fleets or is it all keyboard? Most fleets use comms

On being helpful:

1. Should I do offensive / defensive plexes? Starting with novice? Is this just "farming" lp or does it really help the effort? Yes, always plex all the time

2. Should I donate all my LP to upgrade the systems? Some percent of it? No, leave that to the farmers to raise tiers,

3. Does doing FW missions help the effort or is it just "farming LP"? This increases my standing with the Militia, so thats good right? FW missions are purely for farming, they do not assist in system control. Militia standings do nothing other then get you neat decorations

I hope some of these answers help. Come visit sunny Hasmijaala nestled within the Citadel, see the sights, enjoy the locals

This has been a very interesting thread and I appreciate everyone's input, comments and opinion. If you don't mind I have some follow on questions:

I plan to commit this character to FW completely and i assume that means a permanent standing loss against the opposing factions. I would like to go Caldari as they are the underdogs. If all I cared about was farming LP I would go Amarr.

I agree that living in low sec is the best way.

On picking my initial new home (and assuming I am on my own for next couple of months):

1. Do I pick a low sec system currently "owned" by Caldari?
Yes, or one in non-fw low sec right next to the war zone. Cal mil members will be able to help you more there.
2. Should I pick one that is less contested so that the home station is likely to remain in Caldari hands? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Most 'home' systems stay relatively deplexed.
3. Can I find one with a vibrant market for T1 ships and T2 modules? I would rather buy atrons and incursus frigs from my station than black frog them in if possible.
Most corps worth their salt provide in corp/alliance logistics.

On mechanics:

1. Once I enlist in FW would I likely see mostly blue pilots in and around the home station? For the most part. Or neutrals.

2. Do FW enemies (red) camp the stations? Not really, it's pretty boring and Gallente aren't usually that desperate for kills.

3. Do neutral (pirates) saturate these system killing FW pilots of both sides? Yep, you'll learn who they are fairly quickly.

4. Will FW blue kill other blues when they feel like it? Not really, mostly overview mistakes or something of the sort.

On security status (I have sec status 5 on all my characters, so I know nothing about going negative):

1. Does defending myself from a non FW neutral constitute sec status loss? If you fire first, yes. But better to shoot first and ask if he meant harm after he's in a capsule. But if he shoots first, no.

2. Do gate guns fire on people in low sec with low sec status? Nope.

3. Does initiating an attack on a FW neutral cause sec status loss? Yep

4. Do FW corps frown on a pirate level (-10) sec status? I don't want to mess up chances in joining on in a couple of months.
Lol I'm full pirate, so no.

On joining fleets:

1. Do I just look for a public fleet using fleet finder? You can, though random gatherings arent usually of top quality.

2. Do I need to ask permission to join (etiquette) Eh, no.

3. Do I introduce myself when I join the fleet. No need, otherwise it would clutter comms with introductions. However, when relaying intel or statuses, state your name, then the info. So they know who's talking.

4. Do I just warp to fleet members to find where they are? No, ask for fleet location.

5. Is there a TS setup for fleets or is it all keyboard? TS3 is fairly popular.

On being helpful:

1. Should I do offensive / defensive plexes? Starting with novice? Is this just "farming" lp or does it really help the effort? if you're plexing enemy bases or such, it's helping the effort. Otherwise it's just making lp.

2. Should I donate all my LP to upgrade the systems? Some percent of it? Eh, I wouldn't tbh.

3. Does doing FW missions help the effort or is it just "farming LP"? This increases my standing with the Militia, so thats good right?
Eh, they're just sources of income. Nothing more.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

Lots of questions, maybe someone else will answer them... I'll just say this:

The most important thing you should be looking for is a corp to fly with. Once you do, all of these questions and more will be answered. Not to get all zen and ****, but in order to find the right group, you need to think about what sort of EVE player *you* want to be. Then find people like that.

NO matter what corp or Faction you wish to join, DO your research, look to see how active the corp is, see if the corp you want to join has a public channel, join it ask questions, don't be afraid to ask questions!

Generally its highly recommended that you live in a low-sec system as some people in the Blackrise region tend to camp hi to low sec gates as there only form of pvp.
Remember this is YOUR account, do your research find a corp that is willing or is accepting new pilots as yourself, and once you do finally find a corp, give them a month of your time, try to be active both in game in fleets and in coms, and always ask for advice or suggestions. you won't know till you ask.
Main thing is don't get frustrated, have fun and fly it like you stole it!!

Templis is the best caldari corp, they actually can and do fight and live in low sec and are active. All the other squids live in high sec, only fleet to do gate camping and generally suck at pvp, with individual exceptions of some good soloers of course, but since they are soloers, you wont learn anything from them.

Contrasted to Gallente. We all live in low sec, most of us are pirates, very few carebear at all, and we focus on pvp from frigs to HACs to sometimes bigger things.

For Pvp, Personally, I would recommend C: Templis or G:Rapid Withdrawal over Aideron because they are way more active across multiple timezones and are noob friendly, RDRAW fight Templis daily as those two live near each other and are very active.

So much untruth here it's hard to know where to start. A. All the farmers have flocked to GalMil (have a look at the militia numbers) and CalMil is really not the best place to be for PvE at the moment; B. All the top three CalMil alliances live in lowsec, not just Templis and so do a number of the smaller alliances; C. There are multiple roaming fleets every night run by militia FCs who roam rather than camp.

I think JetStream just doesn't want hostiles living near him so he's directing them across the map and away from his own home to ensure his safety Blink

Why look at a player count when there is a metric that describes pretty much exactly how much farming is being done. Incidentally those numbers show fairly even levels of farming across both militias.

Not including missions, but ive not seen many people grinding missions on either side.

If you mean the total VP count, I'm not sure I would use that to measure farming. I guess it's a question of definition but I wouldn't think that most people would understand all plexing to be farming. The standard use of the term has been, at least as long as I've been in FW, to refer to those pilots who are in the militias just to plex and to plex wherever brings the maximum returns, flipping back and forth on that basis and not having any interest in plexing based on strategic goals. You're right, though, that this week VP levels have been roughly equal but this has been a result of a number of organisations in CalMil biting the bullet and focussing more on plexing to balance out the significant disparities we were seeing in previous weeks.

My deplexing alt has been biting the bullet for weeks, and wishes you guys would start pushing the warzone so that it could make more than below minimum wage for its afk-efforts.

Historically JetStream speaketh the truthiness. However, of late, we have had farmers pumping Galmil numbers. It may be simply because Calmil can't get it's **** together enough to stay at tier 2. Yes it's hard at the number of systems you guys have been holding lately but it's possible. The tipping point disfavors Galmil and doesn't take much. Most of the farmer accounts would rather log in their Calmil alts than Galmil alts, Jita and all that. But you've failed to give them a reason lately.

That being said I can understand the OP. It is why I joined Galmil in 2012. Your heart is in the right place. Good to see a noob character that is not a farmer alt. And anyway, remember it is just a game. I'm sure you'll find some like minded dudes to fly with. We'll have fun blowing each other's ships up. See you in space Smile

CCP, there are off buttons for ship explosions, missile effects, turret effects, etc. "Immersion" does not seem to be harmed by those. So, please give us a persisting off button for the jump gate and autoscan visuals.
