Disclaimers

I know this has been discussed before, but not on the new forums as far as I'm aware.

I know there are ways of doing what is about to be discussed using remote desktop but there are many limitations with that that we all already know.

OK so it is becoming increasingly obvious that eve client is not intended for anything other than desktops, only the heftiest of laptops are capable of handling the behemoth that is the incarna client.

With this in mind is it at all possible that we will see a cut-down station client for eve any time in the future, for use on laptops, net books and possibly even some smartphones. (new quad core android) I don't know exactly how much work this would need, or what the number of users would likely be, but I personally think it would be awesome to have a cut down eve client I could use on my phone or laptop for when I am out and about.

So I propose a slim eve client for phones and portable computers

Features

<1gb total size, capable of fitting on most flash memory sticks and smart phones.

No 3d modelling

Able to run on a wifi/3g/4g connection

Market, skills, eve mail, contracts, chat, fittings, science and industry, trade and any other station activities.

PI? (I havent done PI so I don't really know the system, could the remote aspects of this be done from a smartphone?)

New mechanics designed around this new eve client (that of course could still be accessed through the full game)

What are the communities views on this? Would you like such a client? Would you use it? and is this a valuable use of CCP's time?

Are you kidding? The client directory on my system is over 10GB. Good luck getting that shaved down to less than 1GB. As for 3d modeling...isn't that a prerequisite or were you planning on a text client?

Don't ban me, bro!

Just write it in a real language :P

Seriously though, most of that's probably models. A station only bit shouldn't take up much room. Given that kind of access through the API or whatever it would be relatively easy.

Well I figured most of that 10gb is space stuff, ship stuff, avatar stuff and 3d object stuff.

I figured that .jpegs of avatars, ships, and module icons are significantly smaller.

But yes I suppose it wouldn't be much more than a text client. Just a background screen, tabs for services like we have in station already but with everything on one series of icons, basically everything on the neocom + all the station services and then one for chat.

I'm not quite sure what you find difficult to grasp, how long it would take to code is another story though.

If I remember correctly, CCP already attempted to do such a thing a while ago. They basically stated it was too much of a burden and axed it. Players could use it to modify their skill training, but I'm not sure what else could be done.

If true, this is a seriously sad statement on the state of their code base and architecture.

I would like this. Just a small client to amend market orders, skills etc.
