First off, not 'new' per se. Played for a few months sometime around Apocrypha launch, maybe a couple hundred game hours total. For various reasons real life took precedence and I left the game.

My first tour was pretty dull. Never left starter corp, spent most of my time doing L3s for NOH in a Ferox around Poinen or Josameto. Didn't see much of the game firsthand, but there was always a multitude of others whose activity made the world seem vibrant and dynamic. In chat channels especially, there was always something to talk about, whether it be game-related or not.

That is what I find strange revisiting the game now. I remember the essential concepts, though New Eden now looks and sounds so unlike what I remember. Do your research, don't mix guns, don't mix tank, that sort of thing sticks with you easily. Yet in every channel I join, and even in local or PTS chat, there is virtually always silence. I'm curious why it seems like no one's talking anymore. Has the cynicism borne of playing with ten thousand potential predators finally calcified in the bones of the community? Has the conversation simply moved behind a barrier I have yet to traverse?

The forums seem to be very active, and this is encouraging. Just curious about the playerbase. In the meantime I will be in space, keeping my options open.

The channels I'm in are usually quite active. Okay, some days a couple of channels are quiet while others are busy and then they switch around (for instance RvB Ganked channel is very active on Friday till Sunday, while the weekdays it is a bit more quiet).

As for local, no issues there either in most of the local channels I see. Mainly cause it just takes 1 person (which could be you) to change it. Start a convo or something with people in local and usually that is enough to get the others to talk too.

Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Help channel: Help chat - Reloaded

Public roams channels: RvB Ganked / Redemption Road / Spectre Fleet / Bombers bar / The Content Club

Maybe the problem is Pator Tech School? I recently created an alt in one of the Gallente ones (Center for Advanced Studies i think?) and the conversation was quite lively, driven by a few very active people I think. Obviously, if you join a player-run corporation things may be different. Most player corporations have a public chat channel, so you can gauge this ahead of time. Join the public chat and see how open they are to conversation.

I always notice a slow down in everything in game around fanfest time. Also staying in the NPC corp is probably a big part of why you did not stick around or at least come back sooner. Don't make the same mistake twice. You need to make friends in this game don't count on your NPC corp channel chat. Either get a player corp that suits you or get in some chat channels with like minded players.

However you do it make friends and do stuff with them. This is an MMO after all.

Not when you take the time to start a conversation.

The whole idea of it was I think to have a more quieter place for people to ask questions. But it is also a great place to just socialize with others.

PTS was a lot more popular around the time of Apocrypha due to the fact that you could create characters that came with 50 or so orders and some trade skills "out of the box". I have a couple from that time :)

But as others have said, there are plenty of busy chat channels, you just have to look around a bit.

CAS is by far the most active and friendly NPC corp. But there's no way to join it other than being born in it.

As for the historical perspective: no idea, I haven't been in EVE that long.

Thanks for the advice, it is appreciated. Checking in, it seems I will have to continue to search for active channels.

I agree about the NPC vs player corps, so I have started poking around after reading Nightcrawler's thread on the subject. It is early yet and I am not even to 400k SP, so I assume it may take a little time, but I am enjoying re-learning things as I go.

Cheers, all.
