I just signed up for a trial and am totally lost.

I am currently working on "Making Mountains out of Molehills 2". It looks like it will take a long time to finish this one.

I do not want to waste my trial time on drudgery I want to use it to find out if I like the game.

What is it about this game that people like? What can I do in my trial to find out if I like it or not?

Thanx

This is a good basic graph that shows most activities in EVE. As new player you won't be able to do everything, but you can do something in almost all areas right from the start. I could tell you what I like or don't like, but everyone has their own mix of things they like to do in the game, so all I can really recommend is that you try a wide variation of activities and see how you feel about each of them.

From that graph it looks like Cheating/Scamming is acceptable behavior?

This game may not be for me.

Especially the part about being kidnapped and held for ransom. I probably would just quit immediately if that ever happened.

Hell, not just that. Cheating, scamming..."Suicide ganking" where you destroy someone's ship in hisec by doing enough damage to kill them before CONCORD kills you. This is used in conjunction with friends/alts in haulers to take loot from transports carrying valuable stuff.
In nullsec/lowsec, of course, this

Corp theft is big too. If you join a player organization and they happen to give you access to too many assets... Many billions of ISK have been lost (at a single instance, even) to stuff like this.

If this bothers you then EVE is most certainly not for you.

You can't be "kidnapped", the most they could do is warp scramble your ship/pod and refuse to let you go until you pay them a ransom (at which point they may or may not just destroy you anyway). You can get out of this by self destructing, however.

People can use any in-game means to try to screw you, including stealing every cent out of a corporate wallet and every ship and module in a corporate hanger the same day you gave them access rights to it after figuring you could trust them after a month.

In the sense of cheating there really isn't much "cheating" that anyone can do as things like bots are not allowed (though people will joke that CCP does nothing about it).

You skills always train based on the timer and none of the activities you do make them go any faster (but you can effect training times with remaps and implants) so you can do w/e you want and not feel obligated to do a certain activity to progress. AND it trains while you're offline so it helps with a casual lifestyle.

But yes scamming and stealing is even advertised lol

But it comes with the territory of it being a sandbox type game. Space is dark and ruthless but so long as you stay on your toes and are careful who you trust then you'll only ever have minimal encounters with the scammer type people (aside from just sitting in Jita).

Do you mean that mission or whole mission chain?

That mission 2/10 is quite fast - just mine some veldspar from any asteroid field (I think 1000 units is more than enough) and then refine that into tritanium on station.

Don't worry mate. Most piwats don't bother with questions. They blow you up and take your loot.

Its a very harsh game, and its this that prevents this game from reaching the popularity of many other mmos. But I wouldent have it any other way.
Yes scaming, suicide ganking, espionage, and baiting people intto combat are all allowed as its part of the harsh nature of the mostly lawless space civilzation that is portrayed in the game. It is important to note that many of these activites are prohibited in the starting 1.0 systems you are in when you first make your char.

Its this lack of rules and guidlines that makes eve great its the ability to make your own goals and the blast, sneak, outlast, outwit all the obsticalls in your path the way you see fit and then finally look back with an actual sense of pride in what you have achieved make this game one of a kind.

My favorite part of this game is small scale pvp with less then 20 people in fleet(large scale combat can have hundres of players on each side). Its in these battles that every action of every player can have a major impact on the outcome of the fight, its where skills are really put to the test and its about the bigest adrenelin rush you can get from a video game.

I'm a bit baffled. None of the missions in 'Making Mountains out of Molehills' should take "a long time".

Er, the tutorials - that's what they're for.
