Hi capsuleers,
I'm back on Eve after a long pause and a first 6/7 months learning period.
All i've done is FW in Amarr/Minnie, and now with Gallente militia.
I've almost 3b isk from an old markee/somer-blink promo. (i can afford frigates...)
That's for the profil.

I still want to learn and progress at solo/small gang pvp but i'm struggling to find a new ship/ft to explore.
I'm flying mainly rifters but i think my engagement possibilities are very low. I also fly Firetail that i like a lot.

I don't really know what fit to use with it (rifter) except the basic one (AF,scram, web, SAAR)
I've been looking to the slasher but i lack some shields skills, same with breacher and rockets/lights.

Any advice for me ? any fit i should try ?
Thanks for your help Pirate

Actually, a Rifter is really really powerful for solo PVP if you use it right. Fit it to be a scram kiter (scram/web and AB for low sec or MWD in null) and load it with Barrage. Then you want to stay at range (6.5+km) and let your barrage do the work. Most people will load short range high damage ammo which does fck all at longer ranges and will either not adapt at all or too late, if they even could.

This obviously doesn't work against all targets (missile, drone and ranged weapon frigs) but those may be taken care of by adapting your tactics. If you're kinda new to piloting just use the "keep at range" button (make sure to set the distance first by right clicking it) but I'd urge you to learn and get used to manual piloting.

If you need some help with the different tactics go here.

Ok i'll try the scram-kite thing, but i just thought my dps would be irrelevant with barrage.
Thanks for the link anyway.

Rifter is in a pretty bad place IMO. The slot layout doesn't lend itself to any sort of abuse and the ship bonuses aren't very exciting. Really, all it has going for it is good base speed and a utility high. You'll lose in scram-kite range to missiles, drones, and lasers which all project damage much better.

I'd recommend both the Breacher and the Slasher over the Rifter, as their slot layout and bonuses allow for a more focused strategic fit. The Rifter is a pretty good example of "jack of all trades, master of none". The Firetail is also quite good if you are willing to spend a bit more.

[Slasher, TD solo]

Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste
Damage Control II

1MN Afterburner II
DDO Photometry Tracking Disruptor I, Tracking Speed Disruption Script
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I

200mm Light AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S
Small 'Gremlin' Power Core Disruptor I

Small Auxiliary Nano Pump I
Small Auxiliary Nano Pump I
Small Projectile Burst Aerator I

This should fare well again these days assuming you can differentiate turret ships from drone/missileboats. Recently, changes to small beams and small artillery lead to more people scramkiting with those guns (especially tormentors), so this slasherfit should be good once again.

Train into a Huggin w/ recons at level 4 and the requisite support skills at 4. Call me. I'll make you space rich beyond your wildest dreams and you'll have a blast doing it.

More generally. Figure out what you type of pvp makes you happy. Top damage, high speed kiter, heavy tackler, scout..... there are many roles in pvp. Try them until you know what you like.

FW is kind of limited, but a great place to figure out your style. Once you know what you want to be, then train the support skills and fill it out with as much depth as you can. Be the bestest ******* that there is.

Every pilot is a better pilot flying a ship they like in a way they like to fly it. Don't get stuffed into some doctrine or FOTM box and fly miserably. Figure out what "WEEEEEEEEEEEEE HEEEEEE HEEEEEE" is and fly that.

When I pvp I generally use the orbit at or the keep at range options. If you are in a ship where you really need to stay within a specific range, your suggested 6.5k for example, how can you keep with that narrow band manually as you and your opponent are moving so quickly it must be almost impossible to stay at specific ranges.

Train Gallente frigate V and small blasters.

Svipul is also very good if you want an AC platform.

kite fit an AC stabber, use it against frigates. Run from other cruisers. you can get a decent fit on one for under 20 mil.
