New Project - 30 day exploration alt

Once upon a time, a somewhat bored bitter-vet was readin reddit and stumbled accross wingspantt's exploration guide. Said bitter-vet read the whole thing and decided that it would be cool to create a project alt for himself. Since he'd read about the new 'opportunity" system that CCP had created, he decided that he'd do it with a new character instead of one of the alts he already had. Being the attention whore that he is, he also decided that other people might like to read about his exploits, or perhaps just get some ideas of what's hard or easy and some idea of how much ISK you can make doing this.

After creating the character, I decided that I'd pretend, as much as possible, that I was a brand new player who knew nothing more than that he wanted to be an explorer and that shooting crosses sounded boring. I started out with 5,000 ISK to my name and an Impairor (that I got from the Aura missions)

And that's the story of how I met your mo... well, how this character was born.

I'm probably only going to actively play this character for an hour or so most days due to work comitments, but I figure that's a reasonable amount of time for someone with a job. I plan to give this character nothing beyond the initial plex for a month's training time, though I expect it to make enough ISK to buy another one at the end of that month.

Day 1 - 0 hours played

After character creation and completing the Aura missions to get my newbie ship and a small amount of extra ISK, I headed to my career agents. Once there, I ignored all the combat missions and jumped immediately into the 5 exploration missions. They were relatively easy to complete and after 40 minutes of game play, I had a Magnate, probes, civilian relic and data analysers, the skillbooks for Archaaeology and Hacking and a cool 880,000 ISK

It's now time to go to work, but so far I've been annoyed by the requirement to have Survey III trained in order to inject Archaeology or Hacking. I've also been somewhat surprised by just how much of an effect having all the scanning skills to V has on your ability to find sigs. I think I'll be trainging those skills pretty early.

My training queue looks like this:
- Survey I (completed)
- Survey II (completed)
- Survey III
- Amarr Frigate III

By the time I get home from work, I will have completed Survey III and will be able to inject the Hacking skills.

Total ISK made: +874,060 in 1 hour of play time.

Well, as an explorer you're still gonna be shooting red crosses.

Probably would have been a good idea to complete the other Career Agent missions as well since they give you other skills and equipment that's needed. Besides that, most new players are gonna run all 5 Career Agents even if they want to be an explorer.

Anyway, good luck with the project.

When I talk about exploration, I'm refering specifically to relic and data sites. So there will be no crosses to shoot, at least initially, as I wont be doing combat sites.

Project update:
Work interfered with my play time a lot over the weekend, so I've only put about 3 hours of actual play time into this character. So far I've made about 80mil just from a handful of lowsec sites. The high sec sites were particularly non-rewarding. I don't currently have the ability to fit a cloak or a prop mod, so scanning in low is being done in a safe spot. I've only been scanned down once, by a Loki, who botched the tackle (thank you decloak timer!). I was aligned and managed to get out in time. I haven't hit any gatecamps so far.

I would recommend having at least Archaeology/Hacking III before trying lowsec sites. It could just be me being bad, but I struggled to hack a lot of cans until I got III. I also have discovered fairly early on, that you can't use civilian hacking modules outside of the tutorials :D

Skill queue looks like this:
- Survey I (completed)
- Survey II (completed)
- Survey III (completed)
- Archaeology I (completed)
- Archaeology II (completed)
- Astrometrics II (completed)
- Amarr Frigate III (completed)
- Archaeology III (completed)
- Astrometrics III (completed)
- Electronics Upgrades I (completed)
- Electronics Upgrades II (completed)
- Hacking I (completed)
- Hacking II (completed)
- Hacking III (completed)
- Astrometrics IV (in progress)
- Archaeology IV
- CPU Management IV (Allows Cloaking)
- Hacking IV (This is as high as I intend to take this)

I went out to lowsec tonight after work and after making very little over the course of an hour or so, decided I'd do one more system and then hit the sack.

Instead I hit the jackpot with a 2 run BPC for a Capital Semiconductor Memory Cell II. This works out to be about 500mil if I make them and can sell at current Jita prices.

That's just about paid for the PLEX.

Giving your recent windfall would you consider investing in a better ship - Astero - SOE Frigate

I find the scan bonus's + Virus Strength bonus hard to ignore.

But being almost 90mil + Covert Ops cloak is a must it might be a little off your skill plan

heh there was actually a blog that made me play eve. guy was starting fresh as an explorer and made enough money within trial time to buy plex (they were like 300 m then i think).

that's what i did, too. started doing radars on day 2 or so and almost made the money for the plex myself. since then exploration has been my thing. not so much nowadays, as it's more grind than opportunity, but i am sure for the enterprising explorer there is still riches to be made.

good luck to you.

That BPC is worthless...costs more to make them, and the market for them isnt great, least time I checked. That bpc drops quite often too.

It's rare when the big BPC's pay off but it can happen.

You can use this webpage to calculate the cost of the blueprint. (or download "Isk Per Hour")

Another useful tool by the same CSM member Steve Ronuken is Market history - which shows this BPC has been selling for a profit for the last week.
