What does these skills actually do?

I got almost maxed out pi skills on this char, and I made a new char this christmas when we got the 20 days of dual training for free.(skipped these skills on the alt)

I run my pi on both chars at the same planets, and I cant find the difference.

They improve the accuracy of planet scans.

Also makes it easier to spot nuggets (CCP's term for wandering extra-rich "hot-spots", not to be confused with hot-spots in the normal resource layer).

Not essential, but worthwhile if you are a PI specialist.

This slideshow shows the same planet at different skill levels.

What are your actual skill levels for the Planetology and Adv Planetology on your main? And your alt doesn't have the skills trained at all? Are you viewing the planet while in system or remotely? Seems like you should be seeing a distinct difference.

I've wondered if it's viable to have a highly skilled character do the scanning for a low skilled pilot to help with placement of the extractors.

often after you position your extractor heads and click apply, you will notice change in yield.
this because your scanning skills arent perfect and it gives you not-so-perfect numbers.
