Great. Let's nationalize the world wide web. This is so backwards and retrograde, I need a superlative for stupidest.

How about 'Balkanization' (of the internet)? For that is what this is.

Without naming names: Certain countries want to break the net into fiefdoms that they can control, and it's something they are pushing for strongly at various international forums. Certain other countries are fighting against this, but the majority of countries remain in the middle ground. Their officials are persuaded by the arguments of the first group (for a number of different reasons), but they haven't yet swung either way.

If you live in one of those middle-ground countries lobby your government to keep the internet as it was intended... otherwise this is what will happen to you.

Tell us why the internet isn't in these so-called fiefdoms? As I seem to understand (probably not very well), the internet consists of servers. Servers being hardware located on sovereign territory.

Though this is an interesting point raised by the topic, how will CCP adapt its business to upcoming interent laws?

Not sure if trolling, but it's not about where the servers are physically located, it's about control over the communication between them. This about how ICANN functions. Look up the Montevideo Statement or the multi-stakeholder model on Wikipedia.

To some extent they already have (e.g. with Serenity), but EVE simply wouldn't be EVE if there had to be a separate shard for every country in the world.

It's always nice to discuss these things in an intelligent, adult fashion, and I wish to thank Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Payne for ********* , ********* and ************ - in·al·ien·a·ble as these may be.

I certainly hope ****** notices how efficiently CCP has handled this issue.
We wouldn't want them to pull a ***** on them.

The right to free speech doesn't automatically carry with it the right to be taken seriously.

The nature of the internet is such that all laws pertaining to information used on it should really only be covered by International Law. This is ofc only my opinion but im sure most of you will agree that this is the most logical solution.

I am generally against the NWO and Globalisation as i beleive are the Russians. However in this situation we are dealing with a technology that is inherantly Global if not solar-wide in the next few hundered years. Its important that the legal systems pertaining to it are projected and executed from the same pitch and scope.

Any attempt to execute localised laws on information that is technically freely availible with parity and redundance accross the globe it would certainly fail to be effective. Therefore an international law is required.

Wait and see.

The new ruling is to take effect September of this year vs next year but the Russian Internet Ombudsman is asking for a change to the law.

That will be up to their government but he's in a newly created position to see to Russia's interaction with internet companies and he's got some sound looking arguments.

Hello CCP,
i have a question.
31.12.2014 a law on PD was passed and starts work at 1 september 2015. In a short this law means that all companies, sites and etc must keep russian personal data at servers that locates in Russia.
Credit card number is a pd so i wont be able to pay with card.
Even more - email is a pd so eveonline.com will be blocked with my provider if you (CCP) will not keep pd in Russia.

So what will you do with that? Do you have servers in motherland? :/

Link for more info about this law

I guess what that means is that either you won't be able to play or that Russia will end up like China, forever alone in their eve play. Was this Putin's idea?

  - remove the cloaked from local; free intel is the real problem, not  "afk" cloaking -

I hope CCP is able to do something neat that either:

a) changes nothing, and no one's the wiser.
b) changes everything! and makes people cry!

I really hope it's b though.

why speculate ? russia is doing nothing more than protecting their data. the usa does it, europe does it. no drama or worry needed.
the internet is still a big experiment, it will look and feel nothing like it does now in say 20 years. hell i'd say even less.
why is this happening? because data is worth a lot of money.
this is nothing more than,,, we need X data stored here,,, hmmm ok we'll host a server in russia,, will that work,,, yes.
case closed. tin foil hats off,,, back to the game.Roll

Agreed.

Been working on projects across Europe this past year and we've had similar issues in other countries. For example, it takes written permission from the tax authorities for our German subsidiary to use finance systems hosted in the UK, and that's between two EU countries and with no personal data involved.

Businesses are used to dealing with these kinds of challenges and I'm sure it will be resolved in due time. It doesn't look as severe a requirement as hosting Serenity for Chinese requirements.
