EVE Online, hardcore MMO for casual players

Hi all, I've been playing the game for a little more than a couple weeks now, posted in the forums also (this is, already, my second account) and I've just recently read a fairly negative take on the game by another new player.

So I figured I'd give a more positive one to balance things out.

First off, I've played some MMOs in the past, my ultimate reference will be "Star Wars Galaxies" before they tried to turn it into WOW, effectively killing the game.

That MMO was extremely rich, all items being crafted from players, from sniper rifles, combat poles, up to spaceship components, you could spend your entire career being a dancer or an armor crafter, or be a spaceship pilot, or a recluse jedi. There was housing, politics, epic quests, pvp and everything in between. I will never forget this MMO, and I've been looking for something somewhat similar for a while now.

I wouldn't say EVE is similar, not even close, but the sheer depth of this game mechanics is properly mindblowing to me, and definitely very appealing, if not a little intimidating. I'm at that point where I start to realize how much I don't know about how this game works. The more you learn, the more you realize how much is left to learn and this is very exciting.

More importantly, I couldn't really play MMOs that much anymore, I have my own family, my own business to run too, so the countless grinding hours were out of question, I just couldn't afford the time.

Why I believe EVE is perfect for me is simple, I can play whenever I want, do whatever I feel. This game doesn't require to "grind" in order to build a skillset and put the emphasis on actual learning, rather than virtual learning.

Another thing I really like about EVE is the community, at some point, one has to realize that, personality aside, one has to go through a serious amount of technical stuff in order to play this game on the long run, so I know that most players will have at least some kind of intelligence, even tho there are egos, there are bullies and scammers, most of eve's player seem to be rather intelligent people, in some way or another.

Playing eve, especially as a beginner, is a very humbling experience, there is a lot of stuff you don't or barely understand, lots of people with extensive knowledge of the game, this can also be intimidating. You get blown every now and again, and this can be hard for those who tend to take things too seriously.

In a way, I love this game because it kind of forces me to "play seriously", due to the complexity of the whole thing, but in the same way, the way it's designed, it also forces me to relativize, to remind myself that this is "only" a game. Try and have a good attitude if I get my pride and joy one shot'd in lowsec, going back to the station in my meager capsule, my pride hanging behind like a shredded flag.

Anyway, I'm loving this game, and definitely loving the community <3

It shows, no accusation needed. Your humor is 10/10 if you have the intelligence/knowledge to understand.

What really got me hooked on EVE is that it manages to handle elegantly a very serious issue with other online games.

I'm talking about the very wide gap between new players and those who have been playing the game since it first started.

EVE launched way back in 2003, and I wouldn't be surprised if we still have players who have been playing continuously for over 12 years.

In other, lesser MMORPGs, they'd be nigh untouchable - having the best equipment, the most skills, and every other advantage in between.

In EVE, that's not true. Because of the way the skill system is set up, a month old character can be almost as good, if not better, at a particular field than a veteran without even having to actively grind for the skills. That opens up an entire universe of possibilities, and really makes the sandbox for me.

In EVE, like in no other, the Universe is truly yours.

You should remain able to play on an intermittent schedule, and participate and even lead in every part of EVE other than sovereignty warfare or POS utilization/attacking.

this is the thing, in other MMOs, unless you're unemployed and playing 8 hours/day, you won't be able to "enjoy" the game because it'll take basically years of nothing but grinding. in EVE, I can just do whatever I want, whenever I can.

in a way, the way EVE is built kinda filters out many of those who don't see MMOs as games and take it waay to seriously (although I've seen them as well, but somewhat less than other games)

Indeed, EVE even has PLEXes, which if you think about it, is just a great way for working adults like you and me to exploit high school kids and Russians who spend those 8 hours per day mining ice or whatever. They do the grinding, we get the ISK.

SWG used to be my love. FarStar-Europe reprazent Cool

I'd say Eve is an order of magnitude more complex than SWG ever was.
