Just bought a 6850 mostly for battlefield 3 Cool and its amazing runs everything on my PC at 1920X at around 60+ FPS, and should do the same for this year's releases.

Its not so cheap but if you want a bit more future proof it should last a bit longer than the current $50 cards, the difference is only a few months subscription, pay eve with a few plex and the difference is gone.

factual statement: Tom's Hardware keeps an updated list of best graphics cards for various cost brackets ( http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-performance-radeon-geforce,3018.html ) and compares a huge number of graphics cards per game/app type: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/graphics-cards,1.html

factual statement: You can also glean ideas from the "System Builder Marathon articles in which gaming PCs are built for certain budget levels: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-ii-overclock-graphics-card,3032.html Meaning, it explains why a particular component was chosen and what its advantages or disadvantages are. There's also a performance comparison between the low, medium and high budget builds.

sincerity: I rely heavily on this site to determine components when it comes time to upgrade Ye Olde PC.

the thing that hits me is this : power supply -300 watts. on an o.e.m. machine like gateway, i wouldn't expect all that much from it either. you may find this to be a problem after installation, you may not.

rather than the 520, i'd suggest something like this : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121471
for only a few dollars more. a much heavier bang for the buck, that should still theoretically be in range for you.

/2 isk.

I like the idea. If the card is too overpowered for my computer, my next course of action is getting some sort of power-supply / video card (in the $100 range that's future proof for the next few years at least) combo.

I decided on this. I'm unsure if it's a good choice or not, but, if I do find an alternative, I will definitely consider it.

Just got it in the mail earlier today from Amazon since it was cheaper there. Working like a charm. Thanks.

What a great thread good to know can take a little older system and get more life out of it for 50 to 100 bucks!

Thanks for all the comments think I may upgrade one more time before replacing my system.

For the record I have a dual core 3.06 with 6 gigs ram and an old 8800GTS 640 EVGA card that has rocked for years but is dying. About 4 years old I think I got my 900 dollars out of the system. But if I could get a new card and last another 6 months or more I will replace the entire setup I think it is worth 50 to 100 bucks for that.

Don't want to drop a 1000 dollars at the moment.

Why not just buy a better computer? Why are you tripping over 100 bucks?

i dont know your PSU and how much the rest of your rig looks, but for EVE only ATI 6750 or Nvidia 550ti will be perfect. ( assuming u dont want to dual box CQ on max settings or something.
also when you get a new PC you can remove the card and put in your new rig, if your smart get a motherboard with an extra expansion slow so you can crossfire/sli 2 of the cards next time.

I just wanted to bump this thread to let others know that the video card is still going strong.

You can listen to people and their opinions all you want. You might be warned against mine in a thread dealing with New Eden here or there. However, there is one important fact you need to look at;

Using a graphics card that consumes more power than the rails on your PS put out will result in system failure.

You have to read the specs of the power supply, and the specs of the video card. I looked at the specs you gave and the PS only said "300 watts" so I looked it up...

Quote:
- Voltage: +3.3V (13A); +5V (13A); +12V1 (16A); +12V2 (16A); -12V (0.8A); +5VSB (2.5A) Gateway GT5620 Power Supply Replacement

So you can use a 192 watt video card. Anything bigger will kill your PS, and possibly mobo.

Best thing about having a good aftermarket video card in your older computer is when you do decide to upgrade to a newer PC, you won't have to buy another video card for a while. I mean, sure, there are tons of people who want the latest and greatest, but if a video card suits you for what you play and how you play, it can last for years.

I used a nVidia 8600GT in my computers for years, suited me for what I wanted. Mind you, I am not the type to have to have the best looking graphics... just a nice frame rate and looking half way decent. I don't even turn on shadows in games most times, or mess with high detail lighting, lol. Anyway, I gave that computer to my mother a couple years ago when I scraped the cash together to build a new one. The card is still going strong.

Spending a little more for a video card now will pay for itself over time if you're satisfied with how your games play on that card. And oh yeah, Newegg is awesome. Buy all my parts there. Big smile

I'll likely run my current power supply unit into the ground before I purchase a new power supply unit for now, but, I am aware that I have expidited the process. Thank you all for the suggestions.
