WH Newbies Beware: Gas Site Sentry Guns

If you are new to w-space like yours truly and exploring sites in low class wormhole systems, watch out for the gas sites labeled "Ordinary Perimeter Reservoir". They have sentry guns that will instantly lock on and pop an uncloaked scanning frigate, before you have time to warp out. Either scan them down and explore them in a well tanked BC or BS, or wait until you've trained for cov ops and warp in cloaked.

We used to just ignore those sites, but the gas is more valuable now, so they are worthwhile.

Go kill the sentries with an ishtar or T3, and then the gas mining is easy.

Or you could, you know, cloak...

Unfortunately w-space isn't the great unknown anymore. In places like these you can look up what to expect in all sites:

However, I confess that the Ordinary Perimeter Reservoir" also was an unpleasant surprise for me the first time. It is a rare exception though.

Besides, I can't think of anything a cloaky or uncloaked scanning frig should do in a gas site. If you wish to start the timer on the sleepers, you don't have to actually go there. Just "warp to" and abort before leaving your scanspot. This way you can trigger all sleepers and conveniently fly in with your fighting ships 20 odd minutes later.

Can't cloak if you're being targeted ...

Those sentries pretty much instalock you the second you're on grid.

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

Those sleeper sentries are literally the single worst element of w-space. They add nothing but a *you're ship must be this much like a drake to run sites here*-restriction.

On the upside, you can get a passive tanked cruiser like a moa, warp it in first, have it tank the sentries and go mine the gas with ventures - they never switch targets unless the initial target leaves.

I have seen this 2 times in 2 years, that people just warp to this site ;)

True, but a lot of people will panic, especially the newer players that aren't really clued up on this sort of thing.

I disagree, a while back when I was in a wormhole a guy had warped into a site and needed help, all I had was my bomber. I was over 90k out when I warped in, when I decloaked to hit my afterburner the sentry instalocked me 90kms out and took 2 shots

You should blame that guy for warping out and leaving your bomber to catch sentry aggro.

Yeah, and if you don't fly cov ops yet you can't even warp in cloaked. You can bring a bigger ship and blow up the towers from about 100km, out of their range. The tricky part is getting the bookmark in the first place, since once you re-ship your scan results are lost, which leaves you with the weird requirement to put a scan probe launcher on a Drake or something.

Bookmarks, do you make them? Protip: CTRL+B, or right click your scan result and select "save location".

Also, pretty much any "bigger ship" with an appropiate sized active tank can just warp into the middle of the site and blap, if they should be so inclined.

Yeah, well, it's just like my opinion, man.

Warp in, set up a Large Mobile Warp Disruptor II and a Mobil Tractor Unit, then warp off. Go get your covert ops ship and go back and wait for all those nice people to scan down the MTU and warp in thinking they are about to gank something.
