I love those humans in Star Trek. They were the most popular race as well, featured in all the episodes. Despite the spandex . . . or maybe because of the spandex. The jury is still out on that one.

Xenomorphs.

They have the best reproductive cycle, one that doesn't discriminate against race, gender, beliefs or sexual preferences.

Oh wow, I totally forgot about them but I have to agree with you.

I may be a bit outdated, but as for alien species....

... the xenomorphs are my favorite creature. They're not a civilization but they don't need it.. acid for blood, what else!!??
... the Moties. So tragic, and The Mote in God's eye is a fantastic story.
... the unnamed aliens from the alternate universe in "The gods themselves"... they're, huh, alien.

Indeed. I couldn't think of an alien race that I actually think is all that cool so I posted a joke response. But the xenomorphs are indeed awesome. And continue to be awesome despite all the damage done to them by money hungry suit-wearing types.

It seems they're prepping to flog the xenomorphs some more... might be a little more loose change in there somewhere.

Actually I rather liked the Predator and how he was in the original film. There was no explanation really for why he was on the planet or what drove his bloodthirst.. he was just interested in hunting, even if it meant lighting the fuse on his little wrist nuke to blow himself away..

Please no.

But the Predator would win. Victory favors intelligence and technology over brute strength and resilience.

I enjoyed Predator 2.

Yeah Predator was pretty cool. And such an improvement over the original design they had for the creature. heh. Seeing the variations in the outfits and helmets in Predator 2 was also cool. It kinda looks like they build and modify their own gear kinda like how every Jedi builds their own lightsaber. Also, the first Predator movie had Ahnold, who is perhaps my favorite alien of all time.

And now I want to go watch Alien, Predator, Terminator, etc. They don't make em like they used to. Back in my day... grumble grumble grumble...

I will also mention that if you look at the casualties of a single Xenomorph vs a Predator, the Predator was able to eliminate higher skilled targets (and more of them).

I have never seen Predator 2.. will watch it!

What do you think is the best sci-fi race, and why?

Are those the ones from Ursula LeGuin The Left Hand of Darkness? That book kind of worked my mind over a few times along the way. The people who go into a sort of estrus (kemmer, I think it was called?), and either one can become the male or female. And the outworld ambassador, who had to do a long trek across ice with his local radical political opponent. Who very professionally does what is needed to try to ensure their survival. And then goes into kemmer sex transformation, mid-camping trip....

That book was less "sci-fi" than exploration of a lot of what-ifs of anthropology and psychology. I kind of think only a female writer could conceive of that tale, and tell it in depth. Anyway, not a book you soon forget.

I love the Borg.

They're so sinister and all of the episodes and movies they're in they seem to carry with them this sense of dread and danger. Very menacing. Their implants and cybernetics are also just the coolest ever. The newest look at the Drifters also reminds me heavily of the classic Borg look.

I'm also a big fan of hive minds and collectives. In EVE Sansha's Nation and the Rogue Drones are two of my favorite factions.

Fedo. Fedo? Fedo!

No Kermit, they were the blue squid-headed aliens in Mass Effect, this is an Ansari.

Blue aliens seem to be hypersexual. There was that blue gal in Farscape that was always going around screwing people with her ear. She was too new-agey hippy-dippy for me though.

Oh man... talking about hypersexual aliens, Chiana! Hottest alien babe ever. They never really went into her race (Nebari) much though. They were a bunch of controlling assholes with insane firepower apparently. Meh. One of them looked like Elvis.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

That's one fascinating story and a very believable alien society. My only gripe is that, as far as I remember, LeGuin never explains the origin of that race. Are them true aliens? Modified human? I recall that some of them are "ill" and are locked in a gender, without the transitions, and they're both pitied and reviled as sexual perverts -which infludences how the society perceives the gender-locked human envoys.

I agree that it's the kind of story only a woman could tell in depth.

I like the Andorians from Star Trek. They are quick to anger, patriotic, love weapons, are religious and are one of the few races in the Federation that still maintain their own military. Where most other trekkies dream of being in Starfleet, I would want to serve on an Andorian vessel. I like their attitude. They seem very right-wing.

I had a minor fantasy that would have been fulfilled if Commander Shran and a Weyoun clone ever met.. but alas.
