PvP Punisher Fit (T1)

Hi,

I'm looking to try my hand at PvP as a very new player via faction warfare. I know I'll get my arse handed back to me rather rapidly. Nonetheless, I hope experience is a great teacher (along with all the help I get here!)

I'm looking to start small: in a T1 Punisher. From what I've read, it is essentially an armour tank that makes for a good brawler. The vast majority of fits I've found are for T2 Punisher. Would anyone have decent ideas for a T1 Punisher?

You will want to have T2 pulses (you need Scorch), without that it'll just be problematic. Also as fits depend on scenario (where and what are you fighting) it's a bit useless to go "use this here fit" if we don't know where and what you'll want to fight. Having said that, have a look at this.

[Punisher, basic pvp]
F85 Peripheral Damage System I
200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
Adaptive Nano Plating II
Heat Sink II

Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I

Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency S
Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency S
Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency S
Small 'Knave' Energy Drain

Small Energy Burst Aerator I
Small Energy Collision Accelerator I
[empty rig slot]

Thing is that the Punisher is hardly ideal for this, yes it has lots of EHP for a frigate but it's lacking a 3rd mid slot and it's slow. The better option (imo) is the Executioner which is a really tough little thing that is fast and great for scram kiting, it works fine on lower SP.

[Executioner, MWD brawl]
F85 Peripheral Damage System I
Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste
Heat Sink II

Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
Faint Epsilon Warp Scrambler I
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator

Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency S
Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency S
Dual Light Pulse Laser II, Imperial Navy Multifrequency S
Small 'Knave' Energy Drain

Small Energy Burst Aerator I
Small Energy Collision Accelerator I
[empty rig slot]

Would you be in low sec in FW plexes waiting for ppl to warp in then you'd probably switch to AB.

The Punishers problem is that it only has 2 mid slots, but is not agile enough to kite like a Slicer with a MWD/point.

The pivot point of any 'low sec' fit is the combination of Scram/Web/AB for range control. Thus the Punisher is without doubt the least viable solo Frigate in the game. It is the only Frig considered broken and unusable.

The other indirect problem of soloing in a Puni, is that a lot will assume you are the bait for a gang waiting on the other side of a gate, and will avoid you.

The Torm is an outstanding ship, but not great for a new player as you need to train Lasers and Drones to get the most out of it.

So the best Amarr ship for a new player is without doubt the Executioner.

Check out Sutonias vid of a 20 day character getting good kills in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvOB4KXYk-o

But note that you want to use Scram/Web/AB, not Scram/Web/MWD in low sec. This is because Sutonia is fitting for fights in nul, where fights take place in open space, but in FW low, fights take place in the close confines of the plexes, and a MWD will be switched off on contact by your opponents scram.

It is flown as a 'scram kiter', that is you orbit at about 7-9km. Your best targets to fight ate brawlers like the Incursus, Merlin, and Rifter, as well as MWD kiters like the Condor and Slicer who will be dead in the water if you can get within 10km.

If you absolutely must fly the Punisher, for your first few fights at least, you an get away with just an AB/web in the mids, as long as you avoid kiters. This will give you a chance to get a feel for solo PvP in the very tanky ship. But your opponent can warp off at any time, so it's not viable long term.

PS: The first skill to prioritize training is 'Thermodynamics'. It is essential for scram kiters like the Exec. You can 'Shift Click' Your AB when your opponent starts to get too close, to boost your speed and keep your fragile ship away from his guns.

Overheating is the single biggest boost to overall performance a new player can use, and L4 only costs you a day or so of training time.

Honestly... I would recommend that the OP go for a Tormentor instead. While it may require a few more skills (for drones) it is a much more forgiving and flexible ship for a newbie.

As the others said, Punisher is not suitable for soloing. It can be beastly DPS or Tank wise, but anything you engage will be able to run away from you.

I second the suggestion of going Tormentor. Executioner is also very nice. In either case, put Gatling pulse lasers in the highs, Damage Control and a heat sink in the lows, AB/MWD + web + scram in the mids. Then depending on how much space you got left, start filling the rest of the low slots with what you think you need. Experiment, see what works.

Thanks a ton guys! Ah the newbies make mistakes everywhere, even when it comes to choosing ships!

I'll use the punisher for a fight or so to get a better feel of what happens in the plexes, then move on to Tormentor/Exec. In the meantime, I'll start training drones, lasers and thermodynamics.

I think there is a danger of making this overly complex. As a new player, the OP has got the right idea - get in a cheap frigate, get out there and die some. Learn a bit, rinse and repeat. By all means discuss the best ships and fits for solo PvP, but the most important thing at this point is just being there.
