I have an idea for a new mechanic, This mechanic would be focusing on the high amount of abandoned POS's we currently have int he game.

The idea would involve a new ship and skills surrounding it with high prerequisites focusing mainly int eh scanning/hacking skills.

The new ship with the use of a new module that that can only be fit to this ship will have the ability to 'Hack' a offline tower that has been left abandoned for 30 or more days. Hacking the tower could be like hacking cans in a normal site but with a increased difficulty scaling on the size and faction of the tower with pirate towers being harder to hack. The hacking process could be a singular hack or having to hack multiple parts of the tower.

If you successfully hack the tower it will begin anchoring , and then you can scoop it in you ship that will have a small enough cargo so it can only carry 1 of the largest towers available. If you fail the hack maybe the tower explodes doing AOE damage which could result in the destruction of your ship if you don't have it fit to tank, also the damage type of the explosion is based off the faction the tower belongs to. Or the tower could go into a lock-down for 2 days where no one can hack it.

The ship would require you to have Hacking V and Archaeology V and would be based off a frigate/destroyer sized hull and due to its complex electronics it would not be capable of carrying a cloak. This means the ship would be very vulnerable when its in hostile space such as wormholes, this gives it a ISK / Risk reward.

The module would act just like other hacking modules with require Hacking V and Archaeology V and have support skills that give you better hacking stats and a higher chance of success.

I feel this could be a nice content generator for the game making people want to go into more hostile areas of space, with the nature of the ship it would work best as part of a team where they have a scout working with them to find a offline POS with the status of "abandoned".

This is just an idea and its entirely open for discussion.

I'd rather abandoned starbases just naturally decayed on their own. Maybe with some cool visual effect, the tower develops a noticeable lean, labs and arrays start sparking, silos leak gas clouds. I like looting abandoned POSes, I'd like it even more if they started to look more like ruins after a while.

Anyway, eventually towers should get so run down that removing them wouldn't be a pain in the ass like it is now. The shield should naturally decay, followed by the armor slowly taking damage.

Why not just shoot it?

I like this idea but the one problem I see if the POS explodes after failing to hack, is people using that just to go blow up abandoned POSes without having to shoot it. But I also like the idea of them decaying over time. Both ideas are cool.

and if you can't do this why not pay some one to shoot it for you

OP, you're idea is not even remotely original. Has been proposed dozens of times. And, is not even one of the better ideas proposed in the last month for dealing with this issue. The search tool may be a pain but you really should consider using it anyway.

Because:
It adds no meaningful gameplay, is boring as hell, and anywhere but high sec is an open invitation to get dunked by people smart enough to know how dumb you must be for doing it.
Evidence:
The ridiculous number of offline towers in space and marked absence of people shooting them.

Aye, and eventually (depending on condition, type and what you hope to gain) become salvageable, hackable and/or analysable. I also personally think any tower in high sec that runs out of permits should gain a suspect flag until more are loaded,

I do like the suspect/permit idea, it ties up nicely with the lore.
