So I've basically just returned after 4 years away and started doing missions again. I run with Hammerhead II's and Hobgoblins II's, but I wonder if that has changed recently? I've head people say that minmatar and amarr drones are the best, and that I should go for sentry drones?

Depends on what ship you're flying.

Gecko - great for very close range (<10km) bigger targets tho it can hit cruisers/frigs too, great damage/tracking for ships with heavy drone bonuses. Con - expensive - 50m/piece
Gardes II - for anything 15-45km range on rattle single omnidir ; single omnidir ; 25-90km range on domi two omnidirectionals + omni tracking enhancer.
Bouncers II - for anything 45+km on rattle
Wardens/Bouncers II - for anything 90+ km on domi
Hobs II - for frigates
---
Mission specific drones for Burner missions
---
I'd use hammers/mediums only on ship like Gila tho.

Thermal dmg is best secondary dmg except against angel
For max dmg use:
em against blood/sansha/drone
explosive - angel
kinetic - guristas/serpentis/eom
thermal - mercenary

Sentries are good in these days

Thanks for the quick response :)

I run missions in a Golem and training for a Kronos just for diversity :) Might try a rattlesnake later on.

Rattle is pretty damn good ship nowadays easy 1000+ dps with great tank albeit slow at moving. I'm only at 11m sp and getting 1200dps on it combined.

So running a Golem in Caldari space, what would be my ideal drones?

5xHobs II , good tracking and thermal damage (second hole in pretty much any npc) and Golem has only 25 mbit/s bw anyway.

The Faction version of all drones does the same damage as T2 but with better tracking and better ehp.

Personally I would stick to what the ship is best at:

Worm: Light Navy drones
Gila: Medium Navy Drones
Ishtar: Navy Ogre or Navy Garde
Domi: Navy Sentries
Rattle: Single Gecko (With Omni-tracking and navigation mods and Durability rig 3800m/s, 1.7 tracking and 30k ehp)

Navy Drones > T2

CCP Quant: Of all those who logon in Eve, 1.5% do Incursions, 13.8% PVP and 19.2% run Missions while 22.4% mine.

40.7% Join a fleet. The idea that Eve is a PVP game is false, the social fabric is in Missions and Mining.

60% more ehp on fed navy gardes and 6% more tracking. For ~3.1x of price. Durability on those usually isn't an issue if you don't afk them. Also doesn't get affected by damage increase from gall/cal/min/amarr drone spec

That is true. At Spec 4 you are looking at around 4% damage loss... but if you want damage you go Augmented instead of T2 right? Blink

In marauders there's no real need for drones these days. Only spider drones are annoying and hard to hit, I usually throw some Hobgoblin I at the small stuff and if they pop I send new ones out.

Google eve-survival for information, what kind of damage you need to apply. Get drones accordingly. Hybrid / Energy turret bonused ships has always limitation to what kind of damage they produce and drones are the way to adjust damage type. For example you will struggle using Appocalypse against Angels. Here 3 even unbonuced bouncers II will help quite a bit.

T2 > navy if you train specializations
Ehp is useless at least for me. Tracking is not issue too :p

I echo the sentiment on lights only for any of the marauders and change them up for mission specific damage.
While you kill big stuff with the ship the lights can be working on the small close stuff.

For any other answers I would want to know which ship you were flying and the primary NPC you go against.

Thank you for your response :) I fly a Golem solely in Caldari space :) Currently running with 5x Hobgoblin II's, which seems to be working fine.

Hard to run the actual numbers with drones, but recently I prefer amarr drones.

That is, for light drones you might as well use faction specific since in PVE they are usually used to clear small stuff that gets too close and their speed and tracking aren't that important.

However if you use bigger drones (usually on dedicated drone boats) things get kinda complicated.

Caldari drones are generally meh. Gallente drones are generally too damn slow.
And amarr drones generally have a good mix of speed, damage and application. They have good tracking combined with good optimal and high orbit which allows them to hit undersized stuff pretty well. So if you are planning to bash a lot of frigs with medium or heavy drones, amarrs are the faction of choice. Well, excluding geckos of course.

Oh. And curators are like gardes that actually shoot out to ranges where they still can track their targets.

I generally recommend and use the hobgoblin II and hammerhead II for all missions, the higher damage multiplication factor usually evens out any resistance based losses they suffer.

Many will talk about the increased speed or tracking of the non-gallente drones and how important it can be. In PvP I can see the point and even agree with them, on the other hand for mission it is a moot point the hobs are more than fast enough. The only ships in any level 4 missions that that hobs cannot keep up with are the spider drones and they are essentially irrelevant anyway as they are so weak damage wise you can ignore them unless you are clearing to loot/salvage.
