Do you just chew through everything or is the scanner worth the shield loss to reduce wasted cycle time?

Scanner = more effort.

You decide. (hint: f*ck effort)

Scanner is better, it's a must. It will save you a lot of time that can be wasted when you don't know how much ore is left in the asteroid being mined...

I usually sort the scanner results and mine the biggest asteroids first.

A shield on a retriever is not going to stop many ganks. If I'm worried about the amount of shield I need I switch to a Procurer.

If you're gonna fly a retriever, you might as well fit a scanner. Your best tank is to buy a permit and not be AFK ;)

lol

pro tip 1: you can have 5 tabs in your overview. you can have a separate color coded tab for each rock you mine

pro tip 2: setup bookmarks in each belt, this way you warp directly to the rocks

bottom line. yes, shield on retriever is not going to stop a gank, but! the scanner is not needed either if you use pro tips. so, fit for tank and pray that the bad guys don't bring enough catalysts.

I'll quit the game before I pay extortion money. And I'm not quitting the game.

For me, scanner is the way to fly. Thanks all for your input.

for tank i would recommend bulkheads so and if u can still fit an mse u should be able to survive 2 catatlysts not sure if its fitable so

As far as I'm aware you need about 20k EHP + to survive 2 Cats (well in a 0.7 or 0.6) and to get that much tank on a Ret you will have to have a PWG implant to make it fit but it is possible.

EFT says 26k EHP with 3 bulk head rigs, a DC2 , MSE and 2 Bulkhead mods.

thats more along the line i thought off (21k against void) needs 3 cats to make sure in .5, 2 might be enough so

Basically the same fit swapping out the mid, but you get a second MLU for slightly less tank. (20.6k vs 21.3k EHP against Antimatter)

[Retriever, Standard Fit]

Damage Control II
Mining Laser Upgrade II

Thermic Dissipation Amplifier II

Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II

Hobgoblin II x1
Mining Drone I x4

Drop the Thermal Amp down to a meta one if the CPU is too tight.

Also, a tip to get even more tank. Take 2 Reinforced Bulkhead II with you and drop a mobile depot next to where you're mining. When a gank ship shows up (or even just when a known ganker is in local), swap your MLUs for the bulkheads. As a bonus, you can take a salvage drone with you and swap it with your hobgoblin when you want to salvage wrecks.

buy a permit? wow, i hope to god these guys find me mining somewhere and attempt to extort anything. i would love it.

anywho, you'll get 25k ehp from a dc2, double reinforced bulkheads and triple tranverse rigs. this leaves the slot for a scanner open, opportunity to refit, yadda yadda.

the scanner is handy on those last rolls of the strippers that end up empty. it's a small thing, but a thing nonetheless.
