Podkilling gets you what?

This is I'm sure a very noob question, but as someone who isn't looking at doing any PvP in the near future I have to ask, whats the point or appeal of podkilling someone after their ship has 'sploded? Do you get extra cash? Some sort of standing cred? Personal gratification? I just want to understand whats going on.

(please remember this is the new player Q&A).

all of the above apart from standing (you might get some pseudo standing from players though)

For the most part, personal gratification. You also get a corpse to add to your collection. Then there's also the the chance that the pod was loaded with remarkably expensive implants and will likely be a more valuable killmail than the ship was. Finally, there is some strategic value to it as someone who is podded likely won't be reshipping and coming back to the fight.

If the person has expensive implants there can be a fairly high bounty payment for podding them.

In fleet battles it can be strategic to pod enemies to delay them reshipping and getting back to the fight (it can also be counter productive if it speeds up this process - depends where they are based).

Sometimes it's just personal.

Some people just kill pods whenever they can to help maintain the risk/reward cost of using implants. Otherwise we'd all be running around with pirate sets without a care in the world.

Mostly people will just kill anything that moves. If you can catch it, it's fair game.

Warm fuzzies and a "toy" to play with later. Twisted

In all seriousness... there are some legitimate reasons for podding someone.

- you want to remove the possibility of the victim's fleet warping on top of you (you can warp to a fleetmate's pod)
- you want to remove someone from the field so they cannot relay any information to allies.
- you want to cause great economic distress/cost for the victim (if they have implants plugged in)
- the bounty payout might be worthwhile (provided the pod has some expensive implants in it)
- you know the person in question and REALLY do not like him/her
- you can get money for the corpse (if the person is well known and/or hated by many)
- you want to add to your "meat locker" / "corpse collecttion"TwistedLol

Followup question on bounties:

So you get 20% of the SHIP value when you 'splode the ship, and then also 20% of the pod when you pop it (only possible value being implants)? Do I have that right? (assuming the bounty is greater than the 20% in both cases).

I don't always pod. Not always a good thing. But if I see a newb who I know has all purple mods,or one that talks smack in local well I know this will be fun!

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

Important safety tip: in case you're asking these questions in a "why should I kill someone's pod" kind of way, keep in mind that doing so in high sec and low sec will come with a large drop in your security status unless the person you kill is a legal target. This penalty does not exist in null sec and wormholes. A low sec status can be a pain in the ass if you hang around in high sec.

Is there a way to tell what implants a pod has beforehand? Do they show up somewhere in ship or player info?

There are three types of people, those that can count, and those that can't.

No but if the ship is pimped I extrapolate.

Some people just want to watch the world burn.

Another reason that hasn't been raised yet is to increase demand (and hence prices) for implants, and indirectly to increase prices for loyalty points from missions.

Higher prices on these things may or may not be good for you as a player, but there are definitely people that know how to profit from them. One reasonably well known implant trader has been known to sponsor a few people to play 'pod roulette' by giving them hundreds of cheapfit Thrashers that can one-volley a pod (or two-volley a shuttle and pod).
