+1 for the "who gives a damn" group.

I've been to a couple of informal EVE player meet ups in Texas and each time I was the only black person there (don't let the white girl avatar fool you, it was like being a raisin in a bowl of cornflakes!!). Of all the things to be concerned about in this short life, why more 'people like me' don't play EVE or attend meet ups is so far down the list Satan could use that part of the list as toilet paper.

I know a good few female players, some good some bad, none of them are fundamentally different that any other player.

No, it doesn't.
But that doesn't stop social justice warriors from crying bloody murder about it.
I'm seriously surprised the fact that there are so few female gamers in EVE hasn't attracted more attention from that crowd. It's probably because Ms. Sarkeesian doesn't know about it.

Well, Sarkeesian has done more damage than good to gaming as a whole.
Social Justice Warrior's can carry on crying.
Though this is a good hypothetcial, what would CCP do if the SJW started bitching? Would they appease them?

I was going to ask if you really thought Icelanders would give a **** about that... but I'm not so sure given that incident a few years back where CCP made a questionable hiring decision and got a lot of backlash over it. Of course, that was because this specific member of the community was known for leveraging her femininity and attractiveness for popularity and gifts from male players.

Lol BS

It might happen OCCASIONALLY but I hear Mirana and other women speak up on comms pretty regularly and nobody behaves any differently about it. I think the one time that some guy did make a big deal out of it he was drunk at the time, and everything else he was saying was driving people into the No Chatter channel.

Depends on how outraged the community will be as a whole, more than anything. Bad publicity can kill and people enjoy spinning stories out of control just to smear somebody else, because why the **** not.

I know - you lot have a good reputation where that is concerned. If everyone would learn from the example provided, we'd probably have more women active in the game.

On the flip side, I used to fly with a corp with one women, and a bunch of men. She got so much unwanted attention, she neded up quitting corp and starting her own just so our CEO would quit hitting on her on comms. And these are the groups that new female players will hear about first, I'm sure.

Eve is like an addiction; you can't quit it until it quits you. Also, iderno

"The average gamer may not be who you think he is. Women older than 18 are 36 percent of the game-playing population, while boys younger than 18 are only 17 percent, according to a recent study by the gaming advocacy group Entertainment Software Association.

The number of female gamers age 50 and older increased by 32 percent from 2012 to 2013. Men still make up 52 percent of the game-playing population, but women, now 48 percent of the gaming population compared with just 40 percent in 2010, are closing in. The rising popularity of mobile gaming is one reason why." Washington Post

The thing about that is, Facebook and "Mobile" games aren't really considered to be "gaming." Nothing like this, anyway.

As a female gamer playing EVE, but with a group of female friends who do game, but refuse to play EVE (and think I'm just a bit off my rocker for playing it) I think I can add some insight - since we have discussed this with each other. I do think, to begin with, the figure for "mature" females beginning to outnumber teenaged boys is becoming a fact. Some disputes you see on this forum over this game have a whole lot to do with tailoring this game to WHICH group? We are worlds apart as people.

That's a fact I don't think CCP realizes. I think they see themselves as boys (who're losing their greying hair now) amongst boys. So, female input on some EVE issues is taken...wrong. Even the contempt for "carebears" teeters on the edge of disrespecting, and claiming a rather large demographic isn't welcome here. We of course, aren't going to take that crap from a bunch of unwashed testosterone overloaded males who do this 'cause they can't impress a female well enough to get a date. *bobs and weaves* The pink sock, locket wearing dingbat female is a thing of the past. Meow.

My friends who game love to fight. I think seeing them play some of these games would be a real eye-opener to a lot of guys. They can be viscious to an extreme, but aggression? Puleeze. That is not a male domain. Those who I know who don't like this game object to the violence for no particular reason. They prefer fights that lead to a concrete result of some sort, not just fighting to be fighting which is seen (by them...and me) as a male, testosterone-driven spazmo fit. We see the guys behave this way IRL in other ways, and it's part and parcel of the same thing. That is a significant gender difference. I'll caveat - you can never say one size fits all.

Ladies I know prefer to build and nurture things, and see them grow. If they're going to lay something low, it's in the interests of destroying threats to maintain or preserve something they're growing. EVE is seen as being dominated by people who just like to get enough of what they need to destroy other people's stuff. It's a sandbox. These people just run around kicking sand in people's faces, while crowing, "It isn't against the rules, carebear!" Nobody with any sense pays for such an experience.

Get real. Only a fool can't answer your question - Why don't more women play EVE? 'Cause women aren't stupid.
There are other games my friends play. EVE doesn't exist to them. It only exists in the minds of those who play it.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

EVE is a 'hard" game, and takes a lot of "work". If you look at what men and women tend to go into for careers and degrees, men tend to go into "hard" careers that take a lot of "work". Now I'm not saying women don't work hard, but they don't tend to go into the STEM fields (Science, Tech, Eng, Math) because that kind of work does not generally appeal to them for a variety of reasons. EVE is pretty much the STEM of the gaming world, and the kind of difficulty and gameplay is not what I would associate a women with doing. The games women tend to play are puzzle games (That's the one I do know), and puzzle games are about as far from EVE as you can get, and EVE won't really appeal to women.

That being said, the women I have met in EVE are awesome and CCP Seagull for president

I dont think that its the sci-fi theme that drives women away from EVE, there have been studies to indicate that sci-fi fans are almost 50-50 (%) regarding gender. Compared to the alleged but wooping 5% of females playing EvE, its a landslide.

i would also not blame the immature comments or foul language, those annoy all mature people equally, regardless of gender.

as to the point raised, about men behaving like idiots around women, I really fail to see how men need EVE for that. Its something that happens everywhere, all the time and therefore not a valid reason to drive women away from eve in particular.

The explanation I have is based on the different mindset of men/women. Even in this modern day and age, when for some reason we are being bombarded with bollocks on how the genders are equal and identical, I resist and still celebrate their differences.

EVE is a very competitive game, in almost all its aspects. From the moment one chooses to not simply ignore everyone else and be social in EVE, heavy competition emerges in many forms and even in its purest form, virtual combat.

At this point, I will risk a generalization : All men are competitive. Most women are not, at least not in the narrow-minded way that men are, always having "something to prove" and "territory to mark". Cmon, admit it, its true. We (men) are hairless apes, always looking for reasons for competition and even making up reasons when there are none to be found. Even the few males that are inherently averse to competition are usually social misfits and special names have been invented for them ("sissy, pansy" etcetc).

To conclude, its this specific heavily competitive nature of EvE, where 'the strong thrive' and 'the weak perish in pools of their own tears' that appeals alot more to the male mindset. Most women simply do not see the point in this giant "pissing contest" that we call EVE online.

Its like a male-targetted car commercial. Take a note how on all of those, the protaginist appears to be better than anyone else, theres always comparison.

+1 on it being BS. had to be said.
I cant believe there are people thinking like that, I only hope its out of ignorance. Science used to be a male "thing" maybe 100 years ago when all things where male things. Take a look on recent studies and statistics, you might feel ashamed for voicing such an opinion.

you've just confirmed why the term carebear arrived. Pissing contest, which it is.

I'd agree with all above, except ... not all men are competative, ... it's like you say, most women are not competitive, equally 'most' men are competitive, and it's the competitive in men which means they can't understand why some can't be, and thus they must be misfits and labelled as such and trashed. Women don't label the competitive (it's usually, also, the men who do that lol).

Don't you think it's a bit ironic to generalise all men as prejudiced?

EVE is what it is. If you want to change the game itself with the aim of making it more attractive to women, then no, your input is not welcome. There's no inherent reason that game should be changed to cater to you. If women aren't playing EVE because EVE doesn't contain elements that women want it to have, I don't see a problem with that. There are, as you yourself have pointed out, plenty of other games that women can and do enjoy playing.

Could be a bunch of reasons. Lots of gamers don't play EVE online regardless of gender, it is a niche game without a lot of mass appeal. Serious women gamers are a bit of rarity. I'm seeing more an more women playing games, which is cool, but still no where near the numbers that guys do (yet). Now without inadvertently chest beating, you have to be a bit of a "serious" gamer to even approach this game. You can play casually, but you have to devote a lot of time regardless to learning the game, and you have to be a bit more hardcore of a gamer to even do that.

So if I can pull some statistics out of my ass and say EVE would appeal to 20% of gamers and apply to that to a pool of 200 gamers, 100 male, 100 female; 20 of each would even play it. But then the question becomes how hard is it to find 100 male gamers vs 100 female gamers in the first place? By the time you find them you'd have found 1000 male gamers, 200 of which would be playing EVE by the time you found 20 women to do the same. Do that for 10+ years.

It could also be because of the Internet message board trollolol 20-something subculture that permeates the game that thinks racism, sexism, and misogyny are cool. All MMO's have it but the setup in EVE attracts it like a lint brush attracts...well lint. CCP does its part to kill that stuff when it can in game, but since so much of EVE requires you to use out of game resources the landscape is like a minefield full of n-bombs, sammich jokes and interaction with socially maladjusted dudes who learned all they needed to know about women from pornhub.

Or it could be other reasons beyond my feeble attempts at reasoning.
