EVE_NT Nottingham Tournament Rules!

Fellow referee & commentator Bob Shaftoes and myself have been having fun balancing the pre-fitted ships with many of the matches going to hull vs hull at the end so I'm quite excited about this event! Bob has done a great job of coming up with the fittings and designing them so that the matches will be bloody (no OP tanks or glass cannon ships) and not too long yet force the competitors to make wise selections about picking the right ship, and I cant wait to see how the meta develops as the tournament progresses.

February 2015 EVE_NT Tournament Rules

Registration

  • To compete in the tournament players must register their interest on the door by placing the name slip they are given when registering in the designated box by NO LATER THAN 12:00. This is important! We can’t accept pre-registration because we want to ensure that the tournament will run as smoothly as possible and this ensures that all 64 players drawn for the first round will be in attendance and on-time. Get there early if you want to be in the tourney! Please note that the tournament final is scheduled for 21:00 so please do not sign up for the tournament if you plan on leaving before this time.

  • 64 players plus 20 reserves will start to be drawn right after the box is taken away by CCP Gargant (or in his absence one of the tournament referees), and the schedule will be drawn up as soon as it's picked. The fighting starts at 1pm so be ready!


Tournament Format

  • 32 Teams, single elimination format, 31 matches.

  • Two players per team, drawn randomly.

  • One frigate and one cruiser hull is allowed per team. Determination of who is flying which must be made by team members before their match.

  • The day will be split into two different formats, with the first 24 teams being knocked out in the initial format that will last run from 1pm-5pm and a ‘finals’ format between approximately 7-9pm to decide the winner.

  • Teams will be given the schedule at the start of the tournament and players will be expected to make their way to the preparation area no later than 10min before the start of their scheduled match. If both competitors in a team fail to make it to their allotted match time they will be automatically disqualified. If only one competitor shows up a name will be called out from the reserve list, if after 3 names have been drawn and no player steps forward the match will be void. The reserve list will be drawn at the same time as the initial 64 and will be posted to people to see, names will be called out in order and only get the opportunity to step forward once.

  • Players will only be allowed to use one of the accounts (with ‘all lvl V skills’) given to them at the computer they are allocated.

  • The arena will be a sphere with a 75k radius from the beacon marked by an anchored container. One of the referees will be sat at this location in a ship to lock all the other ships, the lock range of the referee ship will be (very close to) 75k which will be used to determine if a player has crossed the boundary, if a team member crosses the boundary then his or her team will be instantly disqualified and will forfeit the match. Shooting the referee ship will also result in disqualification.

  • As the tournament progresses the referees reserve the right to change the rules between each round if needed to ensure the swift running of the tournament. Players will be notified if this happens.
  • Intentionally trashing the pre-fitted ships or pre-bought modules will result in instant disqualification and the player will need to be careful on any dark streets they walk down after leaving the venue.

  • Should an unexpected situation arise the referees decision is final, in the unlikely situation that both referees (Bei ArtJay & Bob Shaftoes) disagree on a ruling then the deciding vote will be cast by CCP Gargant.

Match Format - Round of 32 and Round of 16

  • Each match will consist of three stages.

  • Before the match a race will be selected at random by one of the tournament staff (Bei ArtJay, Bob Shaftoes, or an assistant) from either Caldari, Gallente , Amarr or Minmatar.

  • Stage 1: Ship selection. Time: 1min. The race selected in the pre match draw will determine which racial ship hulls are allowed for the present match. Competitors will have one minute to select from pre fitted hulls in the character hangar.

  • Stage 2: Set-up. Time: 1min. The referee will announce the end of stage 1 and all players must stop fitting ships and undock. They then have to warp to one of the four bookmarks they will have which will place them at 0k, 10k, 20k, or 30k from the arena beacon. It is recommended players group guns, load ammo etc during this period. As stage 2 ends the referee will count 5,4,3,2,1 go. PLEASE NOTE: Players are not allowed to lock an opponent until the fight starts. It is up to the competitors to point out to the referees if they are being pre-locked, as once the match starts there will be no re-start.

  • Stage 3: The fight. The fight will last maximum of 4 minutes. The winning team is the first one to knock the other out, or the team with the most ships left at the end of the 4 minutes. If a cruiser hull and a frigate hull are the only remaining ships on field the team with the cruiser hull remaining will win the match. If it is a tie then a coin will be flipped to determine which team will go through. In a tie situation referees can also award a win or a loss to a team using their own best judgement if they feel that one team is not participating in the spirit of the event.


Match Format - Quarter-Final ,Semi-Final and Final

  • The format will be the same as the previous round but with the following changes;

  • Teams will not be restricted to a racial hull type. Teams can select any ships from the pool of frigates and cruisers as long as they only have one of each class

  • Matches will last for 5 minutes instead of 4 minutes.

Running a tournament this size over one day was kinda daunting as is and we had to move the start time back a bit to give us a bit more time per match.

Really sorry about this :(

The biggest issue for me organizing this tournament was deciding what is 'fair' in terms of getting 64 out of the 150 attendees into the tournament. We considered pre-registration, organised teams and other ideas but essentially the most fair way of doing it was by lottery of the people who actually turn up on the day and we know are present (we expect a few people to drop-out so will have a reserve list).

Due to the REALLY tight schedule (we have to get through 31 matches in the day, nightmare!) we want to get started as early as possible which means getting the draw done early.

If we do something similar for the next EVE_NT (all being well with this one) then I hope we will have the time to do things slightly differently to ensure that those people who are really keen on taking part in the tourney can guarantee themselves a slot.

We really hope that even if you don't get picked in the draw you will still enjoy spectating and cheering or your corp mates & frenemies while checking out the Valkyrie tournament that CCP are running, chilling on the couches upstarts while playing Dust and generally socializing with other even nerds and CCP.

Thanks to everyone who attended and took part in the tournament on Saturday!

Thanks to bob and his well balanced ships!

We had 62 people in the pot at 12:00 and waited 5 min more till we hit 64 so it turned out everyone who wanted to fly got to.

If anyone has any feedback/comments about the tourney and any improvements they think we could make, things they would like to see in the next one, or bits they particularly enjoyed feedback will be welcome.

I cant thank Bob enough for partnering with me on this and to the Confetti games students who were super helpful in the smooth running of the tourney!

Also we didn't see 1 Moa fielded! WTF guys!

Tournament Trivia time!

The most used tournament cruisers were the hull tanked blaster vexor and the rapid light missile launcher caracal.

The most used frigates were the kestrel , tristan , incursus and merlin.

The Amarrian ships were distributed fairly evenly , with the pulse maller and armor omen being used a bit more than the shield omen. The punisher was the most used frigate by far and the tormentor was the least used.

For minmatar , the rupture was the most popular ship with the plate AC variant and arty rupture being used fairly equally. We saw a good mixture of frigates being used with the breacher coming out on top in terms of usage

Gallente ships wise , we saw slightly more vexors used than thoraxes , with both the hull tanked blaster fits coming out on top vs the rail rax and the armor vexor. In terms of frigates we saw mostly the incursus and tristan fielded with only a couple of atrons seen in the tournament

Caldari ships were fairly interesting. Ham and rapid light caracals were widely used , with only one heavy missile caracal being spotted and no moas of either variant fielded. Merlins and kesterls were equally popular with only one condor being used in the tournament.

Only one match came to a draw in the tournament.

Sadly we forgot to record how many matches each race got in the first 2 rounds , but I believe gallente got the most matches and caldari the least. There was one free for all match selected in the prelim stages.

There will be no twitch videos of the matches themselves as the twitch stream was horribly broken on the day and kept cutting out. What footage we did get was quite unusable
