Wouldn't take much to convince us to make a trip over for a visit and a meetup. WaHo meetup gets +1 from me, though no beer might be an issue. Not sure dry/sober meetups are possible.

There are many fine bars around bham! I would recommend Das Haus the German cultural center, its downtown and nothing like your stereotypical Bama sports bar. Viva los space nerds!
