Domi "Suggested" redesign from Fanfest is simply terrible

I wanted to voice this prior to the Dominix redesign going live rather than afterwards, which, let's face it, is an exercise in futility (and maybe this is, too, but I am at least trying to get out in front of the thing). The Dominix redesign as seen at Fanfest is an abortion. It's non-starter. It takes one of the most iconic models in EVE -- a 'soft but tough' looking ship that was all curves, contours and bulges -- and turns it into a bullet-nosed, overly-industrial wreck. It, frankly, looks like it was put together by someone who hates the ship.

The lovely thing about the current Dominix is the degree to which it is somewhat unassuming. It could easily be rebranded as a 'space cruise ship' as a vessel of war. It's all lights, windows, grace and finesse. The suggested design throws all this out the window: it's thinner and armored, attempting to sleek-and-slim-out something that was naturally voluminous. The space buffalo; the space shoe... the Domi wasn't easily pidgeonholed -- it was it's own thing. The redesign seems to fall somewhere between a Brutix, a Navitas (looking far too much like this frigate than anything else), and a Vexor, sacrificing uniqueness for homogeneity. It's the slash-and-burn Exequror on a much larger scale.

This isn't a case of the Moa redesign -- where the model was almost universally panned as one of EVE's worst, and a complete, top-to-bottom reimagining was widely-lauded -- nor is it another Apocalypse, with a beloved hull that retained all of its original majesty, albeit in a somewhat bulked-up form.

The suggested Dominix changes run counter to both: they take a model that most of its pilots flat out love and attempts to significantly change it. Instead of a visual buff; instead of retaining what made the thing great, it's all out the window -- it's a downgrade; a net loss. It tries to turn a big fat lineman into a lithe and muscular wide receiver, but falls so deeply between those two stools that the result is lesser than either. Not enough of the former is retained, and not enough of the latter gained, so the result is weaker model overall.

The current Dominix is one of EVE's best models. It may not fit into your own, personal perspective of perfection, but for a lot of us, it is precisely that. A Dominix visual upgrade should follow in the footsteps of the Scorpion; of the Apocalypse; of the Maller -- taking something that was already strong and making it even stronger. It should not, however, twist and corrupt and bastardize a beloved ship into something only in the vaguest sense resembling its former glory. If you follow through with the redesign as suggested, you will take 'ugly and loved' and turn it into 'too ugly to fly.' I hope the difference is obvious.

All of the redesigned Gallente ships have been crap. Why change the pattern now?

Gee, you think? You think it was me expressing my opinion? And not, you know, someone else's opinion? My goodness, you must be a wizard. What sorcery did it take to unlock that sealed door, Gandalf?

It reminds me of several Amarr hulls with the armor on the front and top with the "exposed undercarriage". The Augoror for example looks a lot like this. I have no opinion either way on the redesign. I hope that they make the rogue drone version have longer tentacles.

Incidentally, I have always thought that the colors of the four races were supposed to evoke four metals: gold (Amarr), silver (Caldari), bronze (Gallente), and iron (Minmatar). I would suggest to the CCP designers that, in remodeling the Gallente ships, they make them a little less green and a little more metallic. The green should be subtle, in the way the light shines off the metal or something, rather than looking like a coat of paint on the ships.

ive been teetering on training this ship for a long time, and wont because the current model makes my eyes hate their ability to see.

How in the hell do you propose they "Take something that was already strong and make it even stronger" when what we currently have looks like the painful result of one of those early morning hangover 20-minute shaky-leg poops?

He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.

He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.

I hated the Incursus redesign but most disagreed. My point is, there will always be people that like and dislike model changes so once CCP confirms they are going to change a model, the chance of them reverting the change or doing a completely different model is basically 0.

So yeah, sorry mate, better get used to the new Domi cause it's probably here to stay.

ROFL!

Now, back to your opening post. Hmmm.... We have a fugly ship which looks like a head with a bulging forehead (I shudder so hard my entire Vargur quakes when I pass one), and they propose to change it to a slightly less revolting model.

Please, roll out the slightly less revolting model.

there will be always people not happy whit ship redesign (for example i hate the new tempest and stabber hulls), thats why i keep saying CCP should keep both old and new models, ship already assembled before design update should use the old model ship made after the redesign should use the new one

I think it's a lot better than the Dominix now and it's a pretty cool spin on it.

But I also think it could be done better.

And the OP's opinion DOES matter, I'm saying this to those sheep who post above me. Everybody's opinion matters.

My big issue is the new ship looks like its supposed to be somewhat faster and more agile, but the dominix is not.

I think the redesign finally makes it look like a combat ship instead of a garbage scow or space passenger liner.
