Is there a service to change ones name like the service to resculpt your character? Or do you have to contact support/send a ticket in to do that Question

You can't change your name unless they decide your name is unsuitable. This decision comes from your name being reported as offensive.

The meta game would be destroyed if you could change your name whenever you want.

Loyd is correct.

Your actions are meant to have lasting meanings. When Bad Bobby stole 650 billion worth of Titan blueprints a few years back, the name 'Bad Bobby' was forever marked with a reputation of dishonesty and cunning.

This opens some doors, and closes others.

While this is true to some extent, there are discussions on ability to change names in the future. At least it has been mentioned as sometihng CCP is looking at.

Yea like the other's have said, there's not a way to really change that, at least right now.

Tho if it was, that would make keeping track of your player standings for one ... interesting ... lol

Not really, it's the same with a computer directory service. The user name is a property of the user object which also has a ID. The ID never changes, while the name property might. So log everything against the user (player in this case) ID and not the name property. Problem solved.

There have been a few very rare cases of CCP granting name change requests, but only to very new players with very silly names and not much game history. As others said, your actions matter in EVE and you can't avoid the consequences.

That's exactly how things are done Smile (unsurprisingly)

Yes, CCP are considering paid name changes. Yes, full history (including searching) would be maintained.

So lets say 10 years from now, well have characters with names that have been used by DOZENS of previous people ebcause they are "cool names" that get silly after a while so everyone switches off it

keeping track of who was who when and where they were when they were them somehow is supposed to NOT be a pain in the *****?

I saw a friend playing runescape (i used to play, but he kept playing for a while), and his name had something that was different. If you hovered over his name or something like that it displayed his old name. I guess they allowed people to change their names once, because a lot of people made names and didn't realize that iwas actually like a name per say and wanted to change it later when they took the game seriosuly.

I would pretty much fit that. I'll be the first to admit that this name is stupid, and I would love to be able to change it. I think something like hovering over a name, or just having that information shown when you open the character info. That way awoxers and thiefs or people with a bad reputation can still be identified, but if I don't want people to refer to me on TS as "flaming", I could change that.

Someone else mentioned that names would be used over by other people. I think that wouldn't work, it should basically still stay that if a name is used, it is used forever. Even if i change my name, it still says that I was flaming phantom in my character sheet, and no one else can ever be called flaming phantom.

So have many other features, some for years (POS revamp ring a bell).

Currently not possible.

If it will be in couple of months/years, we cant tell and is now of no use to the OP.

Not really.

If you did the reading by the dev release you would know that:

* no matter how many times you change your name (or CCP does it), your character ID is still the same.

* Standings are set to a Character ID in game, not the name.

* if a name is changed, your contactlist will be automatically updated. (So if CCP changes me to Caldari Character 592730682, anybody who has me on their contact list will automatically be changed to cover my new name).

Nope.

As again, if you would have informed yourself, CCP will add a "Name history" just like there is now with corp history. So you can see exactly when and how a character name used to be.

Then again, lets first wait and see. Ive seen many ideas from CCP never make it to the game...so this might not even make its way to TQ.

I think mostly changing names is a bad idea, but like moving characters to different accounts, limit use seems like a good idea.

Right now i am thinking of buying some quite old characters, that have very lame names. It would be great to change them in this case.

Well fun is also good.

That would not really solve all the issues unless there was a tab on character info where you could see old names. A big part of null sec and low sec life is learning the behavioral patterns of the "local residents". Name changes would make much of that type of profiling of little use and even if you could log their names the split second recognition that happens at a subconscious level would be gone as well.

First of all, your deeds and all information about you are tied to your character ID (which is not your name). After name change, new name will be reflected on previous mails/killmails/contracts/contacts/watch list etc. This is why people who argue about character “reputation” probably confused it with something else. No really, you can’t evade your past. Even name change won’t allow it. Sometimes you even have to create new account if you want to cover your tracks because of.. you know… some people may ask you to provide full API.

Low/Null sec? Really? I heard there is rule for low/null sec: neutral in local = enemy. Doesn’t mater if he is know to you or not. Also, you do know, every character info has this “notes” tab? If you fail to utilize it or just too lazy to type its your problem I’m afraid. Same goes for people who keep asking for “new tab” for name history (in case if this service will be launched)
