I'm looking at updating my antiquated headset. I was wondering how well EVE would sound with the 7.1 Surround Sound Headsets? Does EVE even support 7.1 or will it sound like crap?

Take my word for it. It'll sound like crap; especially the bits they taped following dairy cows in a pasture.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

Directional sound is not really that important in Eve. Most of the sound comes from your own ship (which is always at the center of your vision), from your UI (which by definition has no direction), and from music or other ambient effects (which are just "there"). I would pick a pair of high quality stereo headphones over a pair of 7.1 headphones given the choice and assuming similar price points.

Ed: Also: try to stay away from "virtual" surround. All that means is it's stereo (two speakers) but they do some fancy noise editing to try to make it sound better spatially. Your built-in sound card can usually do almost as well, and if you have a discrete one (like a Sound Blaster Z) it certainly does a better job. There are "real" 7.1 surround headphones, which have 3 speakers and 1 subwoofer in each ear, but they tend to run a little pricey and be quite heavy.

You know when someone is hardcore when he wants a 7.1 surround system for silence.

When it comes to drunken babbling in teamspeak, only the best audio quality will do.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

7.1 headsets are simulated anyway. Unless you have ears on the front and back of your head.

In case the point has not been made clearly enough already; you only have two ears.

surround headsets are a gimmick. Get a good set of open back headphones you'll have as good directional sound and FAR FAR better sound quality.

And when we hear things it gets converted back into mono sound by our brain.

Here is some more information on this subject.

Then how can you tell if sound is in front of you or behind. Your brain figures it out by how the sound hitting your ears .... Sounds.. Which is why you can make virtual surround.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

I regret having a 5.1 headset(4 drivers per ear) in terms of EvE because whenever I switch between my 2.1 speakers and my headset EvE sound turns into a bunch of clicking noises. Maybe it will be useful in 40 years when WiS is antique and CCP decides to try to capitalize on it(only to find out that it's like PoS code and they aren't smart enough to deal with it).
