Hello, my friend is trying to play the game and he submitted a ticket however CCP weren't able to get back to him and didn't resolve the issue and so the ticket was closed.

I will paste the contents of the ticket here, in case someone has a solution themselves.

To whom it may concern,

I am trying to log in the game but when i press connect i get the following error: the authentication token provided by the launcher is of an invalid format. The launcher loads the game but every time i press the connect button the connection window loads 75% then the error message pops up. I read through the forums but i was unable to identify a fix for it. I have also tried connecting using a vpn and a proxy but it still won't let me in. This is the first time i try this game so my account is a fresh trial, don't know if that has something to do with it. I would really appreciate your help. I am looking forward to hear from you.
With respect, A

Hello,
Thank you for contacting customer support.
Please ensure that your antivirus and firewall are both disabled, as well as your proxy if you or your ISP uses one. If neither of you use one, please go to Control Panel->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings and ensure that only the first checkbox there is checked.
Best Regards,
GM

In that case, could you provide a screenshot of the launcher just before you click the Play button? We would also like to request an in-depth debugging log to help us identify the issue.
1. Locate launcher.exe in the 'Launcher' folder of the EVE Online folder
2. Right click on launcher.exe and select the 'Send to -> Desktop (Create Shortcut)' option
3. Locate the newly created shortcut on your desktop and right click on it then select 'Properties'
4. In the 'Shortcut' tab locate the 'Target' window
5. Add /log:debug to the end of the text in the Target window. It should look something similar to the text below depending upon the location of your EVE Online client:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\launcher\launcher.exe" /log:debug
6. Once the text is added please click the 'Apply' button
7. Run the launcher one more time
8. Go to the following folder and find the .log file with the most recent date in its name:
C:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\launcher\cache
9. Attach that log file to this ticket
Best Regards,
GM

I take it this has been happening over multiple days? I have had a similar issue happen when Tranquility is down, during the DDOS attacks, but it went away as soon as the server came back up.

What are your friend's computer and operating system specs?

I can't find the problem, sorry. But I lack experience with 64-bit and haven't tried Windows 8 yet.
