Stationary Supers Bumping off each other (900ms+)

Hello,

So today I logged in 3 of my supers into 1 large POS. Avatar was sitting 0m from the tower (but still a visible distance away), Nyx was 5km from Avatar and tower, Aeon was also 5km from tower.

For 5 mins they all sat in the pos happily not moving at all, all of them completely still at 0ms. Then as I was organizing my drones I notice that both my Avatar and Nyx are going 900Ms in opposite direction of each other straight for the outside of POS shields in just a few seconds.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT.

Luckily no hostiles in system, or anywhere in the region. It has happened to me many times on the test server while moving around, but sitting in a pos stationary for 5 mins before the ships decide to play a game of bumper cars????

If I was not watching both my Avatar and Nyx could easily of been hot dropped and there would be nothing I could do because my ships decided it would be a fun to play bumper cars.

Im guessing its a result of the Avatar being 0m of the central control tower, however the avatar was at 0m for 5 mins and actually facing away from the tower.

What type of game mechanics are these? Supers shouldn't even be allowed to travel that fast LOL

On what specific characters did this happen again?

Welcome to the world of bumper physics. Reason it might took a while is that it was waiting on a response, aka something that disrupted the 'perfectly still' situation. As both capitals had their collision sphere overlapping each other & the tower, Fun Stuff was bound to happen the moment something disrupted the perfectly still situation. What this triggered can be varied, from boarding to a shuttle slightly bumping the ships.

On ships that shouldn't move fast but still do. Get a Marauder in bastion mode, then have fun bumping it, I've seen some ridiculous speeds that way, not bad for a ship that shouldn't be able to move. PS: gogo 3.000+ m/s bastion Marauder!

Next step, Bastion Marauder Bowling? See how far/fast you can bump on

In short, bumper physics are all kinds of weird, can do some fun stuff with it tho if you & your friends are in the mood for it.

They should add a new bump velocity vector to their physics. That one will only go to max bump velocity as long as the bump event is happening and drops instantly back to 0 when the event is over. And while they're doing this, they can put in a mass comparison between bumpers to determine the relation of who is getting how fast on the bump vector.

Then again, bump physics is legacy code, so it's probably all gibberish to them.

Several hamsters were bumped out of server and died when they tried to change the collision spheres for something not spherical. Sad

So stop asking the impossible and think of the hamsters!

I'm not asking to change the spheres. I'm talking about a additional velocity instance that handles bumping independent from normal velocities. So the spheres overlap but instead of getting bumped 300km, the bumping speed only lasts as long as the spheres overlap, then drops to zero. All while the original velocity vector remains untouched.

While I'm not a fan of capitals I'm also not a fan of stupid things being stupid just because CCP can't be arsed to change them.....such as 0m/s objects somehow suddenly touching and reacting as if there was a substantial explosion.

It's bullshit badly designed 'game mechanic' that cost someone a titan not long ago (and many MANY other super's).

I can't help but think this is a stealth nerf CODE thread.

That said, I'm all for fixing the bump mechanics. Maybe I'll run for CSM on that platform.

And also, in the case of RnK, saved hundreds of ships. Plus it's hilarious.

Let me think about this. While I cannot address this bumping issue, I can't help but notice that you:
1. are having to hide in a POS shield and
2. that the stark fear of getting attacked even for the short time of being outside of said POS shield is prevalent and therefore
3. having supers must really really suck.

Heh.

From the looks of the OP, it would appear that every super is under the constant threat of being swooped down on and destroyed in two seconds.

Do not all the intel channels and bubble camps amount to something that would prevent that? You'd think this POS was next to the incoming side of Amamake or Old Man Star.

I'm going to take a wild (and probably wrong) guess as to why this happens. As we know, visible ship facing in eve is a function of the ships velocity vector. After stopping a ship, if you wait long enough it turns to face a random direction when the vector loses precision and hits zero magnitude. The ships were playing nice and at a functional (rounded to) 0 m/s when one of them finally hit an "actual" 0m/s. When facing a new direction the server finally calculated that the ships were inside each other, sending them flying.

Now, please tell me how wrong I am!
