I don't know about that...perhaps some of the Hulk pilots end up being happy to be free of the awful mechanics of mining.

I lost my hulk in the shuffle of my first move to null... 2 years ago. Still haven't bothered to replace it.

Hulks need a nerf. Their tanking capabilities are way overpowered currently.

As a hardcore carebear miner... Hulks are fine... I mine I get ore, if I get ganked I get podded...
As a wise man once said SH*T HAPPENS...
I enjoy the game by passing long meetings shooting rocks, others enjoy the game by turning my rock shooter into an expanding cloud of pixels...
I enjoy myself, someone else enjoys themselves... Is that an EVE win?

There is no such thing as a fair fight...

Hulks are just fine. No tank or nerf needed. You can fit the Hulk for maximum EHP (average tanked Hulk has 20k EHP) and lose mining yield in the process (thus less mineral flow) or you can fit it for maximum yield that results in diminished defenses. I have even fitted the Hulk to be battle worthy, but it was never meant to be a combat-capable ship in the first place. It's an exhumer for a reason.

Now, the Orca is a different story. Being that it's a command ship, it can fulfill many roles including that related to combat. It is a command ship after all (regardless of the "industrial" label it has) capable of utilizing 3 active gang-assist modules at once. The average EHP of a well-tanked Orca is no less than 215k EHP. And with a very large capacitor capacity, energy neutralizing it will do very little or nothing even if the Orca is active tanked with shield boosters. To make it more challenging, it also relies on fleet bonuses to buff up its own defenses even more. An armored warfare link and a siege warfare link - shield harmonizer will boost the defenses for not just the Orca but for any Hulk that is fleeted with the Orca. As a comparison, a freighter (which can't fit anything at all) has a slightly smaller tank of a well-fitted Orca and it usually takes 15-20 battleships to kill a freighter. That's saying something.

The only two downsides to the Orca: 1) its long list of skills that need to be trained just for the hull alone plus those for the proper modules and 2) its extremely slow targeting speed. Even with a sensor booster fitted with the scan res script, it will take about 10 seconds to lock a single target depending on the target's signature radius.

EDIT:

***********

There is a common tactic (traditionally reserved for fleet warfare) that the Orca can use to buff up its capacitor in the event a gank fleet comes in with energy neutralizers. Spider tanking. The Hulks can sacrifice a strip miner to make room for an energy transfer array and still be able to fit a proper tank and be cap stable at the same time. If a fleet of about 5-10 Hulks is accompanying the Orca with this fit, they can transfer a bit of their energy to the command ship to quickly overcome the neuts using the collective power of many Hulks.

However, I have not tested this strategy before and I am not sure if the new mechanic regarding reps and aggression can affect this setup. But if it does allow it if the Orca is attacked unprovoked then this will mean that the aggressors will have to focus fire on the Hulks, but that will defeat the purpose of trying to kill an Orca.

Hulks are over-powered.

The drone bays should be removed, and resistances lowered.

They warp too fast, align too fast and the locking time is insane.

The sig radius is far too small and why they even have low slots is a mystery.

And the fire stuff coming out the sides is utter madness, how does fire coming out the sides not make the ship flail about more.

Nerf the hulk, before it ruins Empire.

I've done the mining thing. Too boring for my tastes.

I've done the missioning thing. It was also very boring.

I knew doing both of those that people would probably want to come mess with me just because I was "Minding My Own Business."

People in all walks of life enjoy screwing with the loners that just want to mind their own business. I've never really figured out why, but I'm sure it has something to do with loners making easy targets.

So, why all the whining about suicide gankers? Have these people never attended a school or walked down an unfamiliar street? Never went to the movies or a restaurant alone? You get treated differently when you're a loner. People like to kick stray dogs, no matter what walk of life. Why would EVE be any different?

If getting hisec ganked in your exhumer seems unfair and unreasonable to you, come join us in w-space. The ore is superb and if you setup well it's safer semi-afk than in hisec ... and you very rarely see any of the "bwah ha ha, I'm an evil piwate" crowd in J123456. They too busy rawring and moaring around empire in their padded seat destroyers.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

Really? Any Idea why he would do that? Were the questions really questions or were they attempts at using a question as a rhetorical device? Could he really have so many questions that they preclude a declarative sentence? Are you hearing this in Bryan Griffin's high pitched questioning voice where the voice keeps getting higher as the comically long question drags on?

There just peachy pinatas. I support the killing of high sec hulks it drives up the price of minerals thus making the low sec grave sites all the more valuable. Plus 3 cheap t1 thrashers can gank a hulk and be replaced by the drop so whats the loss?

well im surprised to be honest, that the thread is still semi-active.. but anyways, to mend this little quandary some are having, yes I enjoyed rather much my participation in the killing of many hulks throughout my career. Be free shackled miners! Of course I accept the fact that anyone who enjoys their spaceship games are weak minded simpletons, and that we will be plucked from the streets by ninja snipers hiding on building tops on the off chance we make it to the outside world someday. Well anyways enjoy the video and keep answering the questions (mine?), I may or may not have asked them for any good reason other than to, wait, what?. Its been real emotional, happy new year!

hulk survival guide:

1) get a nub alt to shoot your hulk. concord spawns in your belt.
2) keep concord there. As a clever ganker I will first attempt to "clear" concord before attempting to gank you, by shooting a station, planetary office, etc.. in a nubship.
3) if you are too lazy to check your scanner, at least add concord to overview so you know "white +'s - I'm safe."
4) if concord disappears suddenly, you should be GTFO'ing.
5) but you didn't read this advice and were AFK so... I accidentally your hulk. or 50.

Also pls don't forget to not orbit and mine right by a can.
