Scanning question

So I was out looking for data/relic sites on my exploration alt recently, and I came across a Superior Sleeper Cache site. I had heard that these things were hard to probe down, and the rumors are true.

At first I couldn't get it, so I went back and tried upping my scan strength. Nope.

Tried again. Not yet, but closer.

My alt has very good, albeit not perfect, scanning skills and I couldn't get above a 98.6% return no matter how hard I tried.

Now, I know that there are other things I can do to increase my scan strength (mainly implants and skills from IV to V), but at that point I decided to chalk this up to inability and move on.

It occurred to me later that I didn't know if I was going about this correctly. I assumed that all I needed was more scan strength, but would further reducing my scan deviation helped me in this situation? I had 5 different modules/rigs boosting my scan strength, so they were pretty heavily stacking penalized, but nothing reducing my scan deviation.

Thanks.

You probably just need to manually move the probes closer together, my explorer has very poor skills and when I can get close but still can't get there with the normal layout, moving them closer together has fixed it every time.

They were at 0.25 AU on a pinpoint formation.

Which begs the next question: how do I move them manually? I could fiddle around with it the next time I'm online and exploring, but I have a feeling that may be a while.

Can't remember, it's either shift or alt hold it down and the single "handle" will turn into the old style "multi-handle" and you can tighten the formation like you used to be able to.

I believe you hold down Ctrl (Shift maybe) and it will bring up a box with arrows sticking out of all sides inside all the probes you have on field. You use that to manually drag the boxes closer to the signal in a pattern that can pin it down to 100%. Getting the pattern right is the tricky part but it's basically 4 around it on one plane then make like a 3D X going thru it the other way with the other 4 probes. Good Luck!

Thank you gentlemen, I will give this a shot the next time I go exploring.

To tighten or loosen the formation, hold Alt and then move the probes. Shift to move individual probes.
I have 130 Scan Strength and those boogers can be tough.

Bronson dear,

as soon as you are zoomed in in the 0.25AU pinpoint formation, you need to further zoom in so that those 'bubbles' become really large.
You can then move the formation into the cyno-field symbol. The symbol at 90+% needs to be in 'the middle' of the arrows from all sides.

As you are zoomed in really, really close at this point this is getting tricky since even the smalled mouse move makes insane distances (from that zoomed in point of view).

Your signature will become 100% when you positioned the pinpoint formation as close as possible in the grey box of arrows.

The closer the signature symbol on the map is to the middle of the box the better the scan.

Good luck!

I was already at maximum zoom, with the probe formation box as close to the box as I could get it at the time. In hindsight though, I only made sure that all probes were in range, not that all of the were as close as possible. Lesson learned for next time.

Glad I could help.

Another thing you figured out correctly was that you really need all but that rank 8 skill to V to pin them down Sad
