Hey, newish player here with a point of curiosity that can be answered by Vets and Devs. I'm enthralled by the open-ended gameworld for EVE, but am curious as to whether it was always this big, meaning - was the number of star systems in EVE set from launch or was it expanded gradually or in spurts over the history of the game, and are new star systems in game being or planning to be "created", of course justified in lore as new jumpgate construction.

Just curious is all...

Not a real vet myself. But as far as I know this universe wasn't as big as it is now when they launched the game.
CCP has been adding regions to the game before, so I guess they will do it again if they think it's needed (hint to Devs, we want Jove space, you can't keep it for yourself all the time).

As far as I know, currently the only "added" space has been:

1. The Drone Regions (Southeast part of the map, where Red Alliance et. al. live)
2. the FW systems/region between Gallente/Caldari space (can't recall if there was one added to Minmatar/Amarr)
3. w-space

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

CCP added the Drone regions in 2007 with Revelations, and Black Rise in (I think) 2008 with Empyrean Age, then W-space was added in 2009 with Apocrypha. (Note that W-space systems do not show up on the map)

There are currently ~5000 K-space systems and ~2500 W-space systems, so IIRC, the total number of systems in EVE has increased from about 4500 at launch to around 7500 now.

There is an ongoing debate about whether EVE "needs" more systems, but my personal view is that it would be better to expand EVE by increasing the number and size of meaningful locations within a system. 'More warping, less jumping'.

The New Eden cluster was created by a crystal propagation algorithm with about 4500 stars. The random seed used was 42.

It wasn't me who picked that number. Poke Oveur if you get the chance. He should know who came up with that.

As far as I know, that is correct. He's not pulling your leg.
