not much to type but item was listed at 380k sold for 420k with a sell orderShocked
Does that mean someone wanted to buy it a 420k but i was the best price so it just gave it to me?

Yes,

The cheapest available sell order always get sold first, even if the buyer chooses the higher price by mistake.

Pretty much. The sellorder that gets the sale is the cheapest one, regardless of what the buyer picks. Someone made a blunder, you profited. Smile

Remember this when you are listing buy orders. It's easy to type an extra digit and pay 10x what you meant to pay.

another thing that can happen is when somone has one item that is the lowest and I want to buy like say 20 of them, If it is not worth the difference to buy twice then I'll just buy the 20 that I need from the lowest sell order that has a quantity of 20 available. When a buyer does something like that then everyone with a lower price but lower quantity will get the sell order for the higher amount.

It seems like a simple enough thing to just buy from two different buyers but when you are a Jump Freighter pilot supplying your alliance mates in null and you pull up in jita for example and have a list of things you need to get and who you need to get them for and how much everything costs then it adds a lot of extra math to have to buy the same item from 5 different sellers. Especially since in Eve really cheap stuff starts out in the 6 figure range and with the decimal point that is 8 digits. So with everything being 8+ digits increasing your tally sheet by a factor of 3 or 4 times as many line items is a PITA.

To give an example of Erg's point (which is most likely the case):

You had 1 item up for sale for 380k.
Person B had 200 of the same item up for sale for 420k

Now, person C comes along and needs 50 of those item, with the small price difference, he buys 50 items from the sell order of Person B.

However, yours is cheaper, so what he gets is:

* Your item
* 49 items from Person B

So, he bought his 50 items and got them.
But you get the price that was set by person B, as Person C agreed to pay that amount of ISK for said item.

I do this a lot when buying large amounts of stock.

I value my time at more than the 40k ISK. If the difference had been a large absolute amount of ISK (for instance, if I was buying 30 Ishtars, and you had two at 185m and the next order up was a blocking order of 200 units at 192m), then I would find this shortcut too expensive to take.

I am going to have to be a lot more careful on the market in the future. I always heard that it "bought from the lowest sell order" and assumed it was at the price of that sell order... Oops.

People that get this wrong are like asteroids - they are a useful resource you can extract ISK from.

However, the asteroids often have higher AI :)

Its always a pleasant surprise when this happens. Someone once bought a Dominix I listed for 200mil for over a bil. I certainly wasn't complaining Shocked
