OK, lets back up a bit. Remember he is a beginner.

First of all, they need to survive.

-use 2 mission specific hardeners, and 1 amplifier.

-use an X-L SB, with a SB amp

-in order for the rookie to benefit from that he must have a cap booster with 800 charges, to pulse it, and he may be pulsating it a lot.

-do not use auto-targeting missiles! (If I put auto targeting missiles on my Golem, the dps drops from 1053 to 563dps!), the rookie needs all the dps he can muster. He doesn't need to have his missiles soar out to 200+km.

-the rookie doesn't need to really target fast, as I said he need to survive, so fit a D. C. in the lower slot.

Sure as he gains SP he can start modifying his setup,

C'mon, especially you old vets, you should remember how you struggled thru your first L4s.

Sure L4s are easy and boring for us now, and we can trim our setups knowing what we can get away with.

Sorry guys, I'm just seeing some bad advice to the rookie. We know what works, they don't.

I'd advise the rookie to go with Liang's fit, and with that extra mid slot, a MJD would benefit him. But to me it would be used as a crutch, that just wouldn't be needed after a while. Same with the cap booster, but he may need it for a while.

For a rookie, as I said before, go with a modified Liang's fit. (It worked then, and it works now)

This is what he could start with:

rigs:
3 X rigors

Highs:
6 X arbalest cruise (with Caldari missiles, all L5, 656 dps, 4621 volley: with auto target, 535 dps, 3766 volley, so he would be hitting much less, and that is the problem. The longer it takes you to take out a target, the more damage you're taking.)

Mids:
X-L shield booster, get what you can afford, and upgrade asap (a C5-L only gives about 170 hp/s, not very good for the rookie)
Shield boost amp
2 X mission specific hardeners
1 x mission specific amplifier
cap booster 800 charges
MJD (this is not used to help position for targeting, it is used so you won't lose your ship)

Lows:
4 X BCUs
Damage Control

Drones:
10 lights

So as his SPs increase, the rookie will find he's putting out more damage, and may not need to use the shield booster as much. He may even start taking less damage than before. After a while, he may have earned enough isk, for more expensive mods, and eventually, L4s will become easy and boring as they are to use now. Then go to T2 launchers and implants, and watch your dps soar over 1000dps. Somewhere along the way, you can start varying you setup, by then you will know what works and what doesn't yourself.

they go for about 2.7 minutes. a pretty decent time of not paying attention imo. Oh yea and 3.6mins on a CNR, the joys of having 2 extra launchers and no RoF bonus.

I remember back to my days as a beginner and flying a ship with way too many slots dedicated to tank and not enough damage. I had awful skills, t1 shield hardeners, 700k to 800k sp in missiles (with 512k in missile bombardment, and 256k in missiles 5, so you can just imagine the other skills), at least I had decentish core skills and drone skills.

a resistance amp gives less resists than another hardener, so I would suggest 3 specific hardeners. As for a shield boost amp, sometimes that is better, sometimes worse than a 4th hardener, so adjust accordingly.

and yea in general don't use auto-targeting missiles, although at MJD range they can be nice when you are feeling a bit lazy (and you can find a few other uses for them).

I would much rather have the signal amp, as I think a DCII is far less useful when you can fit a micro jump drive these days. I lost my first raven because I couldn't lock the scramble frigs in between the jams from elite cruisers. plus the scan res is useful all around, and the targeting range is useful some of the time. although I would guess the extra locked targets probably isn't all that useful for a rookie.

Ooooo found it. It's such a shame that CCP invented resculpting. He got a facelift. Also, I now know that I had a character called Sanguinem, and have no idea where he is at. Probably for the best. He was kind of butt ugly.
