Isn't it about time the Capacitor and Module UI was updated?

Yesterday I was watching on You Tube some original Eve Online videos.

This is the original Eve trailer prior to the games release:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwpgXFA3UQk

And here are a couple of short very early game play videos 2003 to 2004:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiz6lomcMoo

&

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yh8zpKt0GA <---Note: If the don't like Linkin park, skip this one.

You will notice that the capacitor and module UI is VERY different looking to what is current used in the games UI.

CCP has massively worked on the look of the space environment, and it has changed in leaps and bounds over the years, as has the design of the ships, and the look of the ships, and the ship effects, but the capacitor and module UI has remained the same since CCP changed it from the original one in the above videos to what we use today.

SO isn't it about time we got a new more up-to-date looking capacitor and module UI?

I remember on a recording of the fan feast...3 years ago the devs showed a couple of more modern looking UI's, but since then zip, nada, nothing.

So if any CCP devs are reading this, maybe for the next expansion we can have a new more modern looking capacitor and module UI.

Personally, I'd like the (look of the) UI to be moddable and allow players to create their own UI which could then be uploaded to CCP and they could "approve" the UI's and have them available for download.

At the end of the day. The best UI's come from the community.

You mean something like this mess? I rather not have this kind of ... whatever it is. The UI and especially the HUD is nice, minimalistic, very functional and not obnoxious. I cannot imagine something that could make it better while keeping these attributes in place.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

I definitly don't like all the uneeded borders around the icons in that screenshot.
just adds to the screen clutter that I personally could do without.

I think the capacitor as is is the most iconic thing in Eve....

The current capacitor/module UI works very well. There isn't any need to change it.

Well it doesn't have to be as universally garish as that, but a more up to date look wouldn't go astray.

What is up to date? More transparency and blur? More monochrome icons? More Apple?

Preferably something to reflect the new look of Eve. CCP seem to have renewed nearly all the graphics except for the UI.

Maybe the next expansion will finish the job.

Yes, please!

I'd like a more interactive UI. And not only the cap/module UI. The interface should feel much more engaging like actually flying a spaceship and not like navigating an application or window manager.

Especially the right-click menu can go to /dev/null

Some concrete points from the top of my head:

1. Circles: While circles tend to look nicer than squares, especially if timers are involved, they are less space efficient; thus, you display less information while using more space. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_packing

2. Suggestion: When in space mouse-over on modules doesn't need to show detailed information, that can be done in the new fitting interface. make those mouse-over tooltips interactive to enable ammunition selection (the same design as the config menu for the compass element - that bracket indication thingy)

3. Get rid of these tiny tiny buttons for overheat, I can't imagine anyone using them. Or make them big. The same goes for the heat damage indicator.

4. Inventory: Unify/integrate the different hangar, assets and whatnot interface elements. For example allow choosing the station for which the hangar content should be displayed - much like in the new industry interface. Allow the search function to find stuff in accessible containers.

But first, I would suggest to design some mock-up interfaces or do a few questionnaires to get a feel for what interface elements capsuleers need the most, which elements don't get used, which are used in combinations (e.g. hangar + market or hangar + fitting), which can be self-contained (e.g. map), where more information should be displayed, where less, where interaction feels sluggish (right-click menu), etc. etc.

ITT: messier UI is a better UI.

I rather have EVERYTHING in a simple presentation than get a screen full of distracting design. UI is what we interact with, it needs to be functional, the game behind can get as pretty as it can get but UI has to remain usable.

@ Varyah

1. More circles. Especially more radial menus.

2. I rather keep the tooltips filled with information. I do not fancy opening the fitting window everytime I want to see how far my weapons can shoot when I am under heavy ewar pressure or change ammo to check whether I loaded the correct ammo (it is still very confusing to me in case of Hybrids). But additional functionality besides the information can certainly be included.

3. You use the buttons? I only use the to see whether I am overheating or not at all. For activating/deactivating I use the much more convenient Shift + Click. For that purpose, their size is sufficient.

4. Search already finds stuff in containers since a couple of expansions. You can already go to the station tab and see every station individually. That should maybe extended with a drop down menu to load other stations than the one you are in.

I think its fine as-is. Last thing we need is transparency and monochrome icons. I'm still mousing over buttons to find which one is which, and cannot stand the UI system that does not provide the option to make the windows fully opaque. CCP has much bigger fish to fry than ruining already functional parts of the game. Not that I think they've done so, except with the new UI. It could have used some tweaks, but the icons and lack of total opacity turns me off of it. Everything else has been pretty positive. But, given that this is a UI focused change... I'm slow to trust that it will end well.
