EVE General Discussion

Hey.

I recently (about 2 months ago) invested in my first real gaming rig. Up until then, my PC gaming had always been on laptops. I know, bad moves but meh. For me, playing eve on min graphics and getting 30fps was a good day. It was all I'd ever known.

For my entire Steam library, I'm now able to use my crappy laptop (actually, it's not even a real laptop, just a Win8.1 Touchscreen Convertible. Which isn't powerful enough to run EVE, or most of my games, with it's own hardware) with max graphics thanks to the streaming/remote play feature now built into Steam (I forget it's exact name).

Which has led me to wonder, can I do the same with EVE?

For those who don't know about it, the steam feature runs the game as you would normally on the host PC, whilst on the remote PC you have cursor control and see the game as it's being displayed on the other machine. If the remote PC fails (the only reason for this I've encountered so far is my battery dying) the game still keeps playing as normal on the host. Edit: A few times my battery has died at some pivotal moment in-game and I've sprinted through the house to get back to my bedroom before my work to that point became undone. End Edit.

Now in my situation, I basically play the game in my bedroom, but then my parents will call me down for something trivial, like dinner or to watch a family film or to "socialise" (A very weird thing where you jsut talk to people using your mouth and ears whilst sharing the same airspace...). Also allows me to go to the toilet without interrupting my game. On my laptop, I just select the game I'm playing and then select stream and suddenly, my laptop is displaying the game and I can control it with the mousepad etc. I then just turn my PC monitor off and take my game downstairs. When I'm finished with the distraction, I go back upstairs, exit the stream and resume the game on my rig. Almost flawless movement between devices.

Unfortunately, I can't do this with EVE, hence my being here. I'm just wondering if there's some nice, simple software out there that will let me treat EVE like I handle my Steam games. I'm only looking for LAN control. Remote accessing my gaming rig and playing games over the internet seems a bit over the top. If for some reason I leave the house, it's normally for a reason more important than games. I know that's hard to believe, but there is.

I'm pretty sure that such software wouldn't be against EVE ToS/EULA/rules as it's merely a facilitator to allow my input to reach the server. I would liken what I'm asking to putting a USB extension cable, or 2, in so that you can use your mouse and keyboard further away from the core machine that actually processes everything. My first alliance in game was the United Corporations Against Macros (UCAM) so I'm a firm believer in anti-botting/macros, mostly because the folks who taught me the basics of the game also taught me that botting etc. is bad, not to mention against the rules.

Not really sure if there's anything more I can add, other than I tried various search terms but couldn't find anything useful, which is why I'm coming to the forums.

Google remote desktop application works ok.

People still buy EVE through Steam?

Yeah .... its called Terminal Services or RDP or Remote Desktop Protocol.

at your run reqestor, type mstsc and press enter ... in the "computer" field on the little window that popped up, enter the IP address or name of the "host" PC.

Now, there is way more to it than this. (firewall, enabling on the host, etc) but that is what google is for.

Windows built in remote desktop works just fine. I sometimes play eve on my phone.

I use VNC, has always worked great, from another computer or from my phone.

I believe if you play EVE trough steam, it brings you back into alpha stage.
