Hauling Corporations - Hauling Concepts, Applications, and Contracts

So, I've started a corporation, a new character, and found myself in a brand new, sparklin' Bestower for hauling. I'm eager to get started, it's a nice relaxed occupation while I get to chat with my friends on Skype and make a profit at the same time, but there's some key questions and inquiries that I need answered before I dedicate myself fully to this venture.

First off, Contracts:

I'm based out of Amarr for the moment, and what I'm finding is that I'm making an extremely marginal profit for hauling. Whilst the collateral is upwards in the millions (50 Million+, ending around 2 Billion) I'm only making roughly 500 Thousand off of said contract upon completion. I'm limited by my cargo hold (5,000m^3, roughly) and it's not too nice. Even the smallest transports are asking for the largest of collateral (PLEX I'm guessing, but it can't all be PLEX, can it?)

This brings me to my next question:

What's the best way to progress my Hauler? Is there an essential set of skills I should possess or train, any specific ships I should aim for? (Definitely looking to get into a Providence and tank that out in the future, but the investment to get into one is massive and doing this marginal contracting is rather limited income.)

Lastly:

What's the best option when it comes to Hauling? Am I limiting myself by trying to dedicate to Cargo Hauling Contracts, or should I expand to independent hauling to fill markets? If I do that, what would be some good tools to help in that pursuit?

Anywho, that's the bulk of my questions, thanks for reading and I look forward to some answers. :P Cheers!

Good luck. You are facing a lot of competiton, namely from Red Frog and PushX. You can put in some systems to see their rates. They offer lots of cargo, up to a bil in collateral or more. They are getting paid about a mil or so per system.

The reason for a limit of 1bil collateral on freighters is that is about the threshhold for gankers (although it just happens now for no reason sometimes). In a hauler I am not sure, but I have heard 100mil is about the threshhold for it to be a profitable gank. So I would be wary of any contract that had a collateral of more than 100mil as they may try to gank you themselves so they get the collateral for a net gain on their part.

You are also going to have to be cheaper than the well established hauling corps mentioned before.

As far as skills, I would say the relevant skills for that ship to get more cargo capacity. If there is a skill to give more cargo capacity, then oyu want that (although i am pretty sure there isn't). Otherwise, skills to give you more Shield, armor, and hull HP is good, as it means you will be more likely to survie ganks. Get skills for expanded cargohold II and tanking mods to increase cargo size and EHP. Also get some rigs that give you hp, more cargo, or faster align times {and the relevant skills for those).

If oyu go for a providence, then you can do that. they are expensive and move slowly. If you have alts or friends, oyu might want to use them with webs to make you warp faster. You will be direct competitors to well established corps though, you might be interested in just joining either of them.
Otherwise, you should probably offer a new service. There might be an exisiting corp, but I don't immediately know of any corp that specializes in offering small batch transport to low/null sec. This could be done with blockade runners, or you could use deep space transports to move lots of ships for people moving. If oyu do go to low sec or null though, be sure you know the mechanics and how to avoid gate camps, because it can be dangerous.

You could haul to fill markets. Follow incursions and keep the area stocked, or seed a low sec market. But that would also entail trading and keeping up with your orders, I don't know if oyu would be into that. Otherwise, you would need to pick up public contracts. Also, advertise, post in local. It might be good to get a real website too if your serious, your competitors have them...

You can specialize in low volume high price cargo, adapt the skill plant for that (don't forget fitting and tanking skills).
Deep Space Transports - at least 50.000 m3 of cargo in fleet bay, so you can use all the slots for tank. Also lot faster than freighters, a lot cheaper too.
As a bonus the Transport Ships skill will give you the ability to fly Blockade Runners, fast, cloaky haulers with cargo of about 12.000 m3
which is an amarrian gods bliss for everyone hauling in lowsec.

If you really want to make Hauling your main activity, train toward freighters, and join a corporation like push x or red frog. You can even check the corporation forums for other smaller corporation doing this kind of things. But yeah collaterals are way to big compared to the reward in public hauling contracts, and also risky in my opinion.

A nice way to make money from hauling in an T1 industrial like you is to check Eve central Trade Tool. You can quickly check for Trades to make. Buy from a sell order in System X and sell to a Buy Order in System Y. There is no collateral only the price of the items you are willing to buy. The only "risks" is to find the buy order in system Y fullfilled before you arrived. You have to make a couple of verifications before doing these trades (volumes, number of orders, is it a scam ? etc..)

Hope this helps :)

There's simply too much competition in hauling for me to recommend it to anyone.

I use public courier contractors *extensively* and make a lot of ISK out of their hard work. Here's an example. Recently I observed Crystalline Carbonide Armor Plating selling for 10.2k/unit in Amarr, 11.7k in Jita and 12.7k in Dodixie. I purchased about 3.2 billion ISK worth in Amarr and shipped it to Jita and Dodi for profitable resale.

One of my couriers had an accident en route (despite my alliance affiliation, this wasn't an arranged accident but an independant, for-profit ganker). So I made ISK out of their loss (they were collateralized at 13.5k/unit). Excluding that parcel, however, which was the smallest, I spent 3b on items I sold for 3.5b. Of that 500m in net profit, 35m went to taxes, and a mere 35m went to the haulers.

Think about that. They took most of the risk, and most of the time. I walked away from the deal up 430 million. The two haulers that didn't have accidents wound up making 35m, and the hauler that had an accident was down their ship, 250m in collateral and anything else they were carrying at the time.

Remember - these were not even contracts that I had set up with the intention of scamming couriers.

If you insist on hauling, learn the systems that are dangerous, and take alternate routes (possibly outside of highsec) to avoid them.
