http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/21/7868251/microsoft-hololens-hologram-hands-on-experience

There's an issue with HMDs causing nausea. While head tracking is effectively perfect, and looking around is fine, walking around is an issue. I think it can be defined as a disconnect between physical movement and the body's senses (knows it's not moving).

However, the Hololens does not attempt to disconnect you from your irl environment, and leaves the periphery of your vision intact. I am curious if the Hololens will handle EVE without causing nausea. One of the demos mentioned in the article involved a stationary castle on a coffee table. Like the castle, I'm wondering if keeping the player's ship centered on a coffee table (or your desk) would avoid nausea.

The reasons I think it might work are the preservation of your peripheral vision (and your grounded-ness in your surroundings) and the ship as a stable / steady point of reference.

In other words, what the Rift is to Valkyrie, I think (I hope) the Hololens will be to EVE. I'm also hopeful with Microsoft behind it, and that it will have robust, thorough support for Windows programs. And games.

This is also exciting for me as an artist looking to work in some form of 3D.

I can see the appeal, but I think this kind of tech will have a much better effect with the overhead view.
I can this this being worked into games like Command and Conquer and simular games, don't know how good of an effect it could have on EVE.
I am not discounting it though, I love the new tech too =)

I miss having ISK.

Microsoft takes games seriously enough, and I hope they'll put $ into making the Hololens relevant to games (untouched by the XBox).

Oh they better, Imagine games like Homeworld with the hololens, or Dragon Age... This tech. has so much potential.

I think it has far more potential than the Rift, due to the applications beyond lolimmersiongaming.

I don't know, they both have their uses.
Rift for games like MechWarrior and Valkyrie is nice, while the Hololens(In my opinion) would fit into the strategic games genre more.

Though, I can imagine Fleet Commanders with the Lens in EVE... Would give them a whole new perspective on the battles they are in.

I miss having ISK.

I have some ideas kicking around for UI suggestions (EVE). I am pretty sure that roles such as fleet commanding will always be tied to the PC. However, the fleet experience with far less required input, and using broadcasts, can more easily be handled on a peripheral / something other than a command center PC.

Fleet members get to throw their hands up and yell "whee!!" most of the time as the FC warps everyone around.

For Hololens applications, fleet command would be no, logistics probably no, DPS fleet member maybe yes.

Well you never know, would be interesting to see how this could work, but I think we will have to wait a while until we see it, if CCP ever decides to intigrate it into EVE.

Else, I look forward to seeing how else it can be used.
I already have a good idea on how it will mostly be used, but lets' not get into that here =P

I miss having ISK.

Love the concept and would go well with Eve's radial menus (it's how I imagine using them when in-game - minority report style)
The headset has an uncanny resemblence to Back To The Future but M$ isn't known for it's artist styling (I'm trying to be nice about it :P )
On a sidenote: BTTF boots are being brought out by nike, s'posely, so *crosses fingers* hoverboards soon hopefully... lol

I think it's the happy medium between google glass and oculus rift.
More practical applications than GG, and being able to see your surroundings will allow for more work environment applications than the immersion of OR (I'm sure there may be a dimmer switch for background opacity)

The Hololens seems to be more committed to projecting virtual objects in the physical world, compared to Google Glass. Unlike Google Glass, I would wear the Hololens in public if it is eventually so integrated commercially, say, at malls or in shopping districts (and such), that retailers start using virtual advertisement space.

There's probably a risk in driving, and no need for displaying much more information that we get from our instrument cluster and road signs (keep the cognitive distractions to a minimum), but the utility of receiving someone's expertise in whatever you're doing... is pretty much universal for anyone doing something worthwhile. I think.

Actually, I think it would be a great addition to driving, instead of having to look over at a gps, you could have a line on the road telling you where to go, get incoming trafic reports instantly if a crash is near you so you know to look out.

The posibilities with this tech. is near endless.

First thing I'd get for them is an Adblocker
And As Kelleth has covered, the lense would be great for driving, as long as they maintain minimal distraction. Maybe by the time the lense becomes commonplace, the cars will be driving themselves, but that's a whole other topic.

Yeah, I agree it would be neat, but there are issues beyond getting it approved for safety... like dependability. Road signs and maps (paper maps) don't need electricity or a broadband connection to be effective. I still keep a 30$ / extensive road map of California in my trunk, for that reason.

Dependability is a concern in a lot of industries, even with redundancy. When human safety is involved, nothing beats mechanical dependability.

If you get all "imagine" about it, the list of applications gets wild, like bomb squad + remote soldier on-site. Doctor at the hospital + medic in an ambulance with a patient. (I used to be a medic. That one is actually more possible than not, since it satisfies the requirement of doctor's supervision / direction).

In a Hollywood movie situation, someone with a Hololens could land a plane after the pilots become incapacitated. But in the real world, operating heavy machinery (cars included) is risky.

It's additive, like gps. They won't be driving the cars. It would be a stand alone unit. If they fail, I would presume they would go clear, for example. It's not going to replace anything we currently have, eg: road signs, readouts inside the car, etc.
It might make certain things redundant in practical amount of usage, but like the tv remote, you are still able to use the tv and basic functionality without it.
Talking about Holo-lenses and cars...Holo-lense Windscreen! (hahaha)
And there is no "if we get all 'imagine'", this whole thread is about "imagine" :P

Anyway, in the end, thanks for sharing the info. I'm very interested to see where M$ goes with this.

I can so see EVE using this as a way to separate the HUD from the game and then using it as a virtual 3D radar kinda like that the zoomed out screen they have in the Alliance Tourney streams.

So while Oculus keeps dragging back the Rift, M$ comes with a "next hottest thing" of their own. And it's quite groundbreaking for a change.

Personally as a luddite of sorts, I wonder if Human Body Mk. I is actually ready to interact with digital ghosts. The potential is inmense, but also is inmense the hardwired legacy of our brains and bodies...

Its an amazing concept.

Just to get my head around this correctly...

I could have a wireless headset and drag my eve screens off and slap them on the wall?. Im not sure about walking about with one of these on your head as the girl watching the meeting whilst walking in her office looked like if she went any further she would crash into a wall.

Could you actually drag your char or a ship out of the screen and put it full size? Not that I would attempt to stick a 1000m ship in my living room

On the third day after your birth myself and my sister's will come to you and decide your fate.
