Will the skins be ship specific or can I say use a Quafe skin on any ship I can fly?

A single license will at first be tied to a specific hull and color scheme combo. We do have the option however tying a license to multiple ships. So there is the option of down the road offering a license for the Quafe skin on all Gallente ships and a different one just for the Megathron for example.

And here I was hoping to be able to paint all of my ships Jet-Black... Ah well.

I miss having ISK.

The big question for me is this: how will existing skins be converted to the new system? Do I get a license for each ship I have a type of? Or will the old ones persist as they are, eventually dying out?

I worry that some methods of distribution -- like pirate BC and dessie skins -- will eventually result in oversupply of the market, given that skins will then be indestructible.

edit; also, how granular will these skin licenses be? Will they be per-ship, per-class, or general?

We are still working on the plan for converting old skins to new skins. More on that later.

Licenses will hopefully, still working out the details, have the option of being a mapped to N hulls. So we could have a license that gives the Quafe skin to all Gallente T1 hulls, and another that gives it just to the Megathron. Still working the details out for that though and is maybe something that wont come at launch.

From what I understand, once I set a skin, every ship I get in will have that skin. If I want to have different ships look different, I'll have to go to the fitting window every time I swap ships.

Could you have the client do that for me? Remember my preference for the skin on a ship by ship basis (or a ship-type by ship-type basis) so I do not have to go through a click-fest every time I change ships?

I think it could all be done client side. The client would just tell the server "set the default skin to xxx now" every time I swap ships.

It will be every ship of that type. So if you set the Quafe skin on the Megathron every Megathron will have the Quafe skin. Then when you get in a Vexor it will have the base Vexor skin. You can then change the Vexor to be... Interbus. When you proceed to get in the Megathron it will still be Quafe.

imo the ship skins should be another rig that could be fitted to the ship

So, from what I understand, it's like this:

Using NANOMACHINES, SON!, you apply color-changing paint to the hull that patterns itself based off of uploaded designs you can pick and chose from, allowing you to 'repaint' on the fly by reprogramming the graphics computer on the ship, also handily explaining why you don't lose the design. Additionally, for the moment Concord is rightfully afraid that capsuleers will start drawing stupid and offensive figures on the hull if they had complete control over the system, and is only letting companies sell color designs so far.

Fair enough.

First off: I love this new system. I wish you the best of luck to a speedy and well done implementation. I am super excited to see this system in Eve later!

Steve Ronuken wrote:
Main reason (I think) behind not losing skins? So people actually use them.

An argument that I have read is that they are a cosmetic item. Cosmetic items don't die when you die, but they will still have a chance to die if you carry them around in the cargohold. That makes a lot of sense. Another argument is that the asset you lose is still a ship. A little bit of paint is not going to cost anywhere near the cost of a ship. Also, you aren't going to magically forget how to paint a ship. That makes sense too.

There are a lot of questions about the system. I know you are going to have a another Devblog later. I figure they might be useful to you before then:
- what is the pricing? Are all the different corporations SKINs going to be available from the start? Are there going to be Navy/Corp SKINs for pirate ships and pirate SKINs for navy ships? Are you going to convert in-game drops/LP store skins so that the SKIN license will drop/be purchasable instead? What exactly will the system be, for example buy Kador SKIN then you can apply to all Amarr ships you own, or something different? Are you going to expand the Police Pursuit line of skins? Are certain of the SKIN licenses only going to be found through drops in game or be purchasable through LP stores? Any chance of T2 Ship Corporations making SKINs or is that still a no to prevent confusion of a Blackbird from looking like a Falcon/perhaps CCP will add more T2 ships later?

- Are you going to convert ship skins that are already in game to the new SKIN system or leave them be? (I am going to assume for the next 2 questions this is a yes, or a partial yes for very limited issue skins.)
- I understand that you want permanence with the SKINs so that once applied you can't remove them. What about certain limited issue ships that came with the Collector's edition/mystery code(Tash Murkon Magnate, Nefantar Thrasher, ORE Roequal Skin, etc.), Fanfest/Event Give Aways (Quafe skins and Gallente hauler skins), Ishokune Watch Scorpion, and most importantly the Rattlesnake Victory Edition? These are very limited and after a while may become increasingly unobtainable if they all get applied to accounts.
- Many of those ships described above have been destroyed. I know at least a few Rattlesnake Victory Editions have died. Are you going to reimburse the person who lost it a SKIN license to keep the limited supply of those SKINs in game?

- Most players know that the most successful item skin system around is Counter Strike: Global Offensive. In this system there are "qualities" of skins that show degradation (dirt, scratches, rubbed off paint). So a perfect quality skin of worth more/less common that a well used skin and therefore more valuable. Combine your SKIN system with comments made by the art department about the potential for "dirt" to be added to ships that are around a long time. Would we potentially see "quality SKINs"? (I think this would be cool if there was a way to buy a SKIN, use the ship, after X amount of use/kills/NPC kills, etc. we could unlock a quality skin. Just an idea.)

- Are custom skins something you are looking at doing in the future? If so what would you like the system to look like?
- (Assuming you want custom skins:) Another aspect of CS:GO is that they have players design skins and then submit them with the possibility of them appearing in game. Every few months they add 10-15 skins and the designer gets a payout depending on how popular that skin is. I know there are lots of creative players around who, with the right system, could produce very high quality skins that Eve players would love to fly with. Would you consider a system like this?

just a few questions. I am sure others will have lots more to ask. I hope you found this somewhat useful. Big smile

+1, People crying about not losing the skin are just wrong. Nobody is losing their monocle and whatnot why should this be different? In fact losing ones prosthetics or clothing upon podding makes more sense than losing a license for a nanocoating color scheme.

If the current system remains it's a waste of developer time for a feature that is not used to it's full potential, since due to killboard mechanics no one is going to paint their ship if they plan to pvp with it. You can't make people pad your KB, there are plenty of officer/deadspace/faction fit ships out there for you to munch on.

We paying for these with Aurum or ISK, or both, and/or can they be bought for aurum and resold for ISK?

the skins have less meaning if they're just a thing everyone has and nobody cares about all of a sudden. if they were made like they are now, but more actually usable, and more for ships that aren't terrible, maybe people would use them. maybe try doing that and seeing if it works, before just completely cashing in like this.

Do you think we will ever be able to make corp skins for ships? Or put decals on them like they did in WWII on the side of war planes?

When you buy one from the NES for Aurum you get a license item. That item can then be sold for ISK or traded or lost in an Ibis on the undock of Jita 4-4.

You mean evil pink or evil racing stripes? I trhink that this empires are evil. No better than Sansha. At least give us crazy skinns, not only boring two color variations. Give us what you have showed on Fanfest, those skins, when finished looked awesome. Get this guy who made it and tell him to make some skins. A lot of it.

We are still compiling a list of what ships will be converted over to the new system and what will be left as unique ships. We will let you know more once we have had time to finish thinking about it.

Thanks for responding, also looking forward to corporation and alliance SKINs Cool

How about two types of Licences?
One permanent one which you can buy for Aurum in the NES-Store or get as gifts (like the Quafe-Ships) and a not permanent one (don´t know a better name) for all the Versions who drop from NPCs, or you can buy in the LP-Stores. The later would have a counter of how often you are allowed to get your Ship destroyed before the license expires.

With this you would keep the dropable Skins valuable while the permanent ones, which you probably paid real money on, don´t feel overpriced.

The path taken is good. But atm is a bit too much wow-ish or lol-ish, it needs to have more EVE spirit in itself

Here is the proposal. In order to be a bit more EVE style it needs to meet next two points:
- In order to change a skin on a ship you need to be docked
- If you are docked and you want to change the skin you need to have the appropriate licence n your item or ship hangar.

What are the pros:
- The licence mechanics are still viable
- You still don't loose your licence if you die which i think is a good path
- Licences will have to be moved sometimes and this statement is enough to make the mechanic EVE style. Like this Licences will be tradeable and transportable which adds a doze of risk. Risk = EVE

BALEX, bringing piracy on a whole new level.

This "painting" scheme reminds me very much of Riot's champ skins in that once you buy it, you can always use it and never lose it. But, as appropriate to Eve-O, they can be freely bought and sold as items on the market and in contracts. So while you don't ever have to undock with it in your cargo hold to use it, you still can. inb4 first Paint License haul is lost on the Jita 4-4 undock.

If these are indeed going to be in-game items, then there is the potential to steal entire stashes of corp and/or alliance paint schemes, which can then be flown in battle to taunt them.

WTB Communist red paint scheme.

terrible

It seems like a reasonable middle ground would be to charge an ISK fee to apply a licensed skin to a ship. Keeps this as a bit of an ISK sink and makes blowing up skinned ships slightly more relevant in terms of damage done. Also gives people a reason to think twice before changing their ship skin every two minutes.

As someone who has flown skinned ships before, half the draw is the extra bling factor of bringing out a more expensive ship. If it isn't destructible, this all goes away.
