My #1 problem with the in-game Web Browser

So inexplicably I took a great deal of heat for the 'outrageous' notion of Alt-Tab mining. Roll

Many times, for me anyway, I will be web browsing while Alt-Tab mining. And (believe it or not) the vast majority of the browsing during this time is reading EVE related information, news, etc...

But like many people, I'm a bit of a browser-tab *****. I'll sometimes have as many as 20 tabs open at once.

So.... the biggest problem I have with the EVE in-game browser, which I don't have with out of game browsers, is that when the browser window is closed, there is no way to restore all your previously opened tabs from when you last closed the browser.

On a number of occasions I've 'accidentally' closed the in game browser, with a dozen or so tabs open of pages I was looking at and planning on getting back to. Not to mention if you want/need to log out you cannot restore your previous browsing session. Of course the browser 'history' is also worthless here as it doesn't order the history by most recently visited.

TLDR; So if I had to say the one thing I would most want changed with the in-game browser, it would be adding the ability to reopen the previous browsing session tabs from when it was last closed.

Biggest issue I have is that my vast imgur gif and food porn folders no longer work.

CCP have stated their long term goal is to remove the IGB completely. As a result I unfortunately doubt they'll spend much, if any, effort implementing improvements to its current state.

Seriously?

Gee I hope not. Even though it's a bit crappy and probably the generator of a lot of complaints because of that, it IS better than nothing for when you want to get some quick information without having to leave the game.

I think many people would object to its removal, given that those who don't use it won't care one way or another, and those who do, despite its flaws, probably find great utility in it regardless.

It's neither imminent nor certain but yes, that is their current long term stance.

They plan to move its entire functionality to regular browsers. So essentially you're not losing any functionality except an ingame tool (which sucks because I haven't found a Mac version of overwolf yet).

I see.

So it wouldn't be a CCP created browser, it would be a 3rd party browser (like Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc..) that you could bring up while in game?

Yes but not ingame. It would actually be a third party browser.

The reasoning for this as I understand it is:

A: better browser (CCP can't really hope to compete without massive investment)
B: less security risk from bad browser
C: lower workload from having to maintain an improved browser

Essentially it's a great plan, however implementation is going to be the key issue here. We'lol have to to wait and see for now.

E: if you weren't aware (I know I wasnt), there are programs that allow you to overlay other programs on top of each other specific for things like full screen gaming. That is my biggest issue with the change of I were to pick one.

From what I gather, CREST will:

- pull up data about EVE from the databases directly and make sites like DOTLAN redundant.
- will direct you to a third party browser for any external links.

They could just use a web-kit like the one behind Chromium.

I have two machines, one runs EVE and nothing else, so I open no links on that as I am not going to waste resources on a browser nor have I got anything installed for it such as Flash Player.

I recommend the OP gets a second screen.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

There is an in-game browser?

In all seriousness... why can't you use EVE in windowed mode and then tab out to a small windowed browser that allows you to still see most of the EVE client?
It's safer (for your computer) and doesn't really do anything beyond not have EVE in "full screen."

Computer resources. I tried the Fixed Window Mode with 3 clients and the overall performance of my computer (which is by far not high end) was noticeably impacted: not only were the clients running slower and laggier, the overall CPU usage while browsing something in the external browser was significantly increased (obviously, the PC had to work on all the programs at once, not only just the browser when I'm alt-tabbed or only one client when I use the IGB in that client), which made working with any other software on my PC an awful experience.
The only advantage I had with fixed window mode was when I used only 1 client in FWM and the other in Full screen that alt tabbing between them was a bit faster.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.
