I'm finding a bunch of information but i'm having a hard time making sense of it. Does anybody have any help for me? I want to calculate the build costs for an item in a certain system.

You will need to get the system indices and the adjusted market prices for the input materials from public CREST. Here you'll find more info: http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/industry-3rd-party-developers/
It also explains how to use this data to calculate the job cost.

Build cost:

Get the material requirements for a ME 0 blueprint.

Using the adjusted prices from the price endpoint (https://public-crest.eveonline.com/market/prices/ it's a pretty large document, so I don't recommend opening it in a browser) add up all the material requirement costs.

multiply this by the industry index, for that activity, in that system. ( https://public-crest.eveonline.com/industry/systems/ again it's pretty large, so not in a browser)

If you're not building, but instead doing some kind of research, multiply it by 0.02
