Is the bouncing EVE cat dead or not? When will you know?

When you've sacked one in five of your employees. Have effectively ditched one third of your product range. Still found yourself endlessly mired to developing another that flies the flag of your long term strategy. As well as decided that mistreating your sole cash cow was probably not wise you had better hope someone is listening when you decide to change course.

I won't recount/list all the activities it seems CCP has on the go to boost subscriptions, simple to say though they have our full attention.

However, so far are we paying attention? There are some positive signs here with forum feedback, a boost to player numbers. While good, player numbers still aren't that high, and EVE faces some increased competition over the next few months. How much of this player number stabilization is just post Crucible "Patchpansion" interest remains to be seen (Jester & co?).

Pre-recant from Hilmar forum traffic and low player numbers were brushed off by many as the whining of the few and seasonal player number fluctuations due to moon beams or some other force.

We may not be seeing torches and pitchforks about NEX, but are we seeing real interest now either? How will we read the tea leaves if PCU continues to drift south? In a world were CCP now gives us no real data on the state of the EVE universe, how will you call it?

Keen on your non-rant thoughts!

Hookers, Blow, Beer, and Lutefisk cost serious money.

(maybe not Lutefisk)

As such, CCPs focus on the serious business of internet spaceships has returned. I think a lot of players are watching and waiting to see what CCP does next to determine if they are just placating the cash cow for a couple months, and to see if the Great Leader's apology was sincere or just PR to save their asses.

If we don't see old concurrent player numbers by Spring, DUST better sell like hotcakes.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.

"From a strategic perspective, we had to take these first steps because monthly subscriptions are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. The culture of online gaming is changing, just as the notion of digital ownership did with music. If we don’t evolve our technology, our game design and our revenue model, then we risk obsolescence, and we just can’t allow that to happen to EVE or to our community."

Put more plainly: "We are CCP, we have grand vision, we set ourselves apart from everyone else! Until people invent a new revenue model. Then we must emulate everyone else or die. Oh yes. Of course, we will keep the old revenue model too."

They seriously hurt the game, in part by trying to squeeze more money out of it, and in the 'apology' it is stated that they must continuing squeezing like this to survive. You couldn't make this stuff up.

We will have to watch and wait to see if the work on the real game continues. But the motivation is clear.

I've been playing off and on since '05 and I really do like EVE, or at least a lot of it. (I love the science fiction theme, flying around in space, and exploring.) That said, I'm surprised it's managed to hang on and even thrive for as long as it has. I think EVE needs a lot of work still, but I can't see how CCP can make any big, fundamental changes to attract many new players without upsetting a lot of people vested in the status quo.

Thanks for the constructive reponses Doc Fury, Crumplecorn and Hainnz.

As a data mining type of person I would love to know what type of metrics CCP are using to measure success with the latest release of patch/content.

I think next expansion they are attaching small guns to the large guns that are on the new T3 BC, I dont know if this will attract new players or if the status quo will fight it off though.

I shot a poco last weekend, that's not much but its more then I did for most of the year if you don't include pitchfork waving, station shooting and putting things in order etc. So I guess we have progress.

I dunno but if a cockroach didn't crawl out of his head and fly off in a tiny rifter then he's not the real Kim-Jong Il.

All Icelandic companies are required to file accounts. CCP's annual accounts will be available at the end of the year unless they have the ability to defer posting them and choose to do this (I have no idea if this the case). You can compare turnover and profit to previous years although this year will have both the dip from Incarna plus the re-subs from Crucible.

Ah, an excellent indicactor I had forgotten about that one.

And thank you predictable trolls. I see posting after only reading the subject line is still in vogue.

You got that right; lutefisk is dirt cheap here in Norway (and also delicious).
