Not to take away from your post but I thought I might add that I always read the forums of a game before deciding to play (Which most likely means pay for it these days). It helps me judge how active the community is, general attitude of the community and skimming through some guides and reading the GD/new player help sections gives me some starting info on what's going on and how to do things etc.

I know I'm not the usual and most people will play a game without even knowing a forum exist but just pointing out that there are people like me out there who will read a forum and at least attempt to go into a game with a rough general knowledge.
