Hisec Ganking is Really Fun- and Easy ~my (long) story~

This turned into a long story, my posting sucks, you probably shouldn't read it.

Having a space job and managing thousands of reactor farms isn't the most fun thing to do in Eve. The POS mechanics and management system are god awful and tedious to manage, and really make the game less fun.

In my state of pure boredom and tired of talking about fixing null ore anomalies, I was reminded by an associate that I could always day trip down to empire and dabble with some highsec gankery. Being that I have had a 5.0 sec status for years now, I figured that I'd give it a shot.

It took us about an hour to get set up- moving from Deklein to high sec was pretty quick with instaceptors, and then using our own freighter alts to haul in enough fit t2 catalysts for us to play with for as long as we'd ever want to. Other than having fit ships, my associate and I had no idea what to expect, nor the extent of ships that we could successfully take out.

We first arrived at a mackinaw shooting some rocks in a random belt- I know that mackinaws can get pretty tanky, but we decided to give it a shot anyways. A mere 5 seconds later, the mackinaw was vaporized sporting a pretty unique fit.

Awesome! Nothing like our first successful highsec gank. Being that I'm not totally an ******* most of the time, I convoed the guy and inquired about his interesting choice in mods (or lack thereof). He told me that he had just resubbed and was rather upset that his ship was blown up. Rather than rub it in or whatever normal gankers do, I actually gave him a pat on the back, apologized that he was the first random kill of the day, and give him a nice "welcome back to eve :)". I even gave him some recommendations on how to fit it better and even that he could make more isk/hour running missions or doing basically anything else than what he was doing in a much cheaper ship. He was thankful and went on his way. Damn, I'm such a nice guy.

Rather than just reship and gank the same system again, we decided to head back to home base and scout out some fresh targets. Using one of my several hundred afk cloaking alts, I found a mackinaw mining away at a belt in a nearby system. This guy was much more clever than the last one. He had concord already spawned at the belt, as well as his own scorpion alt next to him. Because I'm generally awful at Eve, I accidentally got too close on my cloaked alt and decloaked. The miner didn't budge; knowing that if I touched him, I would be instantly concordokkened. I don't like being smugged on, so I decided to go ahead and scan him to see what I was going up against. An okay tank, nothing major. I don't know if being scanned happens frequently in highsec, but that would be an instant red flag to me. This miner, accompanied by his alt in a scorpion and concord, fearlessly chipped away at the asteroids around him.

All of a sudden, concord started to align and warp away. As they did, two freshly minted catalysts emerged from the nether and simultaneously engaged the once smug miner. Melting within seconds, the mackinaw exploded (with pretty neat graphics, I might say- one of the few times I've ever turned graphics on high), spewing the pod and its contents all over the belt. Just as I locked up the pod, the scorpion finally locked me. And then I was dead; Concord had come back whence they departed earlier.

As we were warping back to reship, we continued scouting for our next targets. Hulk, Hulk, Mackinaw, Mackinaw, Skiff, Orca, all in the same belt. In retrospect, I should have batphoned some more friends to come help, but I only have one friend and he was already with me.

Just us two, we quickly waited down our timers and reshipped, staying down wind of the unsuspecting miners. AFK Cloaker #67 was already at the belt, waiting for us, 5km off of the group of miners. My friend and I quickly talked about the order of events and which target to hit. Concord was called to a POCO for some reason just as two catalysts landed on grid with the exhumers. Being outnumbered and overgunned, we quickly locked up targets and engaged. Oops, I shot the wrong guy, I'm pretty awful. Luckily, my not awful friend realized I was shooting the wrong target and quickly switched over to help me. Hulk down. Mission Accomplished Cool.

For a few tens of million ISK, I had an absolute blast. There is nothing quite like hunting out unsuspecting prey and the subsequent bloodlust after your first kill. I, too, have miners of my own- yet I did not hesitate one second going out and suicide ganking in unknown space. I urge everyone to try it at least one time, as I just did last night. All you need is a catalyst, t2 blasters, some damage rigs, and full damage mods in the lows. I'm bad so I don't know what they are all called. Go find an unsuspecting Hulk or Mackinaw and become one with the catalyst. I recommend sending them an apology message after the fact for being the random victim of the day, and give them a salutary "welcome to eve".

Bottom line- try something new, have a lot of fun. Suicide ganking is a great and cheap place to start.

tl;dr: go try a suicide gank one time if you've never done it before- you won't regret it- as long as you kill something, hah!

I thought spawning concord to guard you wasn't allowed?

The amusing thing being that prepping or pulling concord away is fine though

Lol

The writing aside, it looks to me that either they have no fear (unlikely with all the publicity about ganking) or they have simply given up and minimal fit their ships for the most yield and eat the cost.

Some people prefer a relaxed game and you can't change their choice.

During a threadnaught a couple months back a GM actually chimed in on this.
Too lazy to dig up the exact post, but the jist was basically 'what's good for the goose is good for the gander'.
concord can still be drawn away with discount donuts long enough for the dirty to happen, so it's not a huge deal.

Seems like a pretty big deal if you can keep them on grid 100% of the time using a low security alt. Pulling concord is also not a good thing. Clearly both exploiting of CONCORD AI.

Usually anything posted by a goon isn't worth reading, but I gotta admit... this was a good read. And yeah suicide ganking can be a lot of fun for the aggressor. Done it only a few times, but it was with corpmates and using alts to remove competition in a system overcrowded by AFK/bot miners. Have to say, it was indeed a lot of fun, and we only botched a single gank despite us using a mish-mash of dessies and not the "god-of-ganking" catalysts. :P

Mario: It's also been confirmed by CCP that pulling concord is a 100% legitimate tactic for either side. Not an exploit.

This is what normal gankers do. It's the miners who are the assholes (typically).

Yes, players having some ability to control their environment certainly is a terrible thing.
