Return Ship For PVE Exploration?

Hey everyone! I have been playing about a month and a half now. I have dabbled in a few different things in the game and got into exploration a few weeks ago. I just skilled up enough so I could get my first decent ship for exploring, Astero, and need to figure out what to do next.

Last weekend I got into wormholes. I started messing around with gas harvesting and today I scanned down an entire wormhole and found 5 pockets full of gas and 2 of them had NO rats, so I was excited to see about 80 million isk worth of C28 sitting right there for me to harvest over a few hours.

I came back with a Venture, and 2 cloud harvesters, and was up to about 6 mill worth of isk and out of nowhere a bunch of rats spawned. They blew me out of the sky before I could even react. I had no idea they were coming and now I need to think of alternatives.

Most wormholes I have been in have been great and full of Data/Ralic/Gas sites, but the rats keep me from getting at anything in my exploration or mining ships.

I am guessing that I need to get a battlecruiser or something and after scanning down everything in my exploration ship, I leave, come back with the battlecruiser, wipe them all out, then return with my mining ship to collect. Is this about right?

If not, please tell me what I am supposed to do, if so, I need to start training a ship that is strong enough to clear these all out, so what do you recommend? I am looking at the harbinger right now, but will it be strong enough to handle what I am trying to do so I can continue exploring. I also love finding combat zones, so I don't mind going back to Jita and returning with another ship to fight, I just want to do it right.

Thanks a lot, loving this game!

You can jump from one gas site to another if you see rats, if you are able to react in time.

I would much prefer to return and blow them up, plus the loot from blowing them up usually makes it worth it.

Legion, or any Tech 3 cruiser in that case.

A Legion is great but would take 1.5 months to train. Is there anything I could train for in the meantime that won't take as long? Exploring all options here.

Well if you want to do data and relic sites in wormholes just do the ones that aren't Sleeper sites (Sansha, Serpentis, etc) they don't have rats other than the player controlled kind :)

As for gas harvesting in a Venture. Be aligned and watch your overview for rats spawning.

Great advice. Thank you.

To be honest, I have been in probably 50 wormholes and most of the sites are loaded with sleepers which is why I am curious about the best way to get all the sites I want, even with sleepers. The next ship I can get is a Stratios, 16 hour training, which I have seen some good PVE fittings for it, but is it strong enough to handle the sites loaded with sleepers?

Sorry, I don't do sleeper sites other than limited (no rats) so I couldn't tell you.

The ship, yes.

I'll qualify that by adding, depending on your skills.

Having Amarr Cruiser V will give you +20% across your armor resists (level IV is ok too initially)

The higher your resists, the better and it works well with sentry drones.

Until you can T2 sentry, the faction sentries are good if you are happy with the added expense over T1.

But definitely the Stratios is good enough for low level wormhole site clearing and even for running perimeter sites, etc.

Hey man, hopefully you know this but just in case... If you train to jump into an expensive ship like the Stratios without the skills to support it you would probably better off using a frigate with a probing bonus, bookmarking the site and then returning with a t1 Battlecruiser or some such.. I would opt for that sort of scenario first to test what your natural piloting abilities can handle at your current skillpoint level before just throwing your isk into the sink. Yes it's a lot of extra time and travel but I think you'll be happy that you took it a little slow to start out.

One alternative source of SOE ships is get some SOE standing up, run missions and build your own ships from blueprints you buy with the LP. Still sux if they die but less painful if you are building your own.

Materials loss is still money loss. I suppose you could look at is as 'free,' but, then again, you'd also at that point technically be arguing that the ships you construct lack all value, which is untrue.
