I dropped the damage control from my cloaky proty fit last night after I got murdered again.

The Boss always sends me in first and I'm sick of dying in bubbles, plus Lotor prolly getting sick of my 1b loss mails. Fitted me up a nice interdiction nullifier subsystem now, but lost a low slot in the process. Figured the DCU should go because Jack said "Don't really need one, handy in fleets though".

Least now I still get to keep both my Mag Stabs because cloaky proty DPS is kinda lame already as it is without making it any worse.
^^See, bananas know their PVP sh*t, too!

On top of that, they're also, well... bananas!

You definitely do not want one to decloak right next to you...

Bananas are awesome. It's not often you find a little snack who's not only so yummy but also good for you.

Nature's own Quafe.

I decloak next to my boss all the time, usually 'cause she wants to see what happens without getting herself killed. It's not always easy being The Banana. But you're right Mr Foyle, I do love her, but not in that way. Just because I see her naked regularly, and just because one of my duties is to attend to the personal hygiene in her lady-areas, doesn't mean anything intimate is going on. I keep it professional yo.

Besides, I'm not really into other space-chicks. Way too hooked on Bananas.

Can someone translate that into human for me?

This is pretty much mandatory when you live in the vast emptiness of J-Space.

While there are a few larger RP groups, for the most part RP in EVE is done on a personal level or with a few friends. This is because you really can't participate in a lot of what the game has to offer without breaking character.

Totally disagree.

Just ask anyone in the corporations I've been in the past year or so. While I may be talking on comms during a fight, meanwhile my characters are shitting up fleet chat, local and corp with their own comments, commentary and antics.

In fact, I've been in comms with you briefly (RIP Sky).

I think you provide an excellent example of how to RP without ostracizing yourself. Perhaps my reply seemed hostile - I was just trying to point out some of the obstacles RPers face from the masses. I don't really have anything against RP myself, I'm just not creative enough to partake. Big smile

But in your reply you touch on several of the things I mentioned..

Quote:
In fact out of the past three corps (and alliances) I've been in I was the only roleplayer out of several hundred people.

This is what I mean by on a personal level. You have to be the one to engage and you can't expect everyone to play along, because that isn't how most people do EVE.

Quote:
In fact I was invited to corps, and not even asked for an API, because people appreciated how I use RP in my daily gaming and interactions with others. They enjoy it, and had come to both know and trust me and my characters.

This is the important part. You RP and have fun, but your corpmates still get to know you as a person. You aren't an RP "purist" who won't join comms because you are afraid of breaking character. Your characters have personality but they aren't backed by some unknown figure with shady intentions.

Candi LeMew wrote:
Really it comes down to individuals. Some RP'ers are jerks that nobody wants around, some non-RP'ers are also jerks who nobody wants around. The RP itself is beside the point imo.

I couldn't agree more.

Care to give your words some ground?

Acting and lying take a similar skill set - convincing people to believe in what you are portraying.

Liars are a dangerous commodity in EVE. People are naturally suspicious when they can sense you are embellishing the truth.

Am I calling you a liar? No...but could you be misleading me? Yes. If all I see is the character, I can't gauge how dangerous YOU are as the controlling force.

I think it can definitely swing both ways. The unknown figure can influence the characters, but if you're a strong roleplayer then the characters should also influence you (and that's where a lot of the fun comes in).

For instance I don't want to lose a ship in a silly fight with corpmates, but my characters wouldn't take an insult from one of them. They would want to blow them up, as much as -I- know how silly that would be. So they will go and attack a corpie like they did the other day in an epic duel on static with Team Miton™.

The girls were winning btw, while they outnumber Jack, until his alt showed up too. RollRollRollRoll

But yeah, when you form a strong character part of being a good roleplayer is making them do the things that the character would do in a certain situation, not necessarily what -I- would do. So what I'm getting at is that getting to know and trust the characters themselves is often as important as trusting/knowing the person behind them.

And yeah, RIP old Sky. Straight

Thanks for the nice words too. Oops

Interesting approach.

I can assure you that lying and roleplaying have nothing in common.
You are having a superficial view on this.

Telling a lie creates a conflict in his mind,
while a roleplayer doesn't. A roleplayer doesn't lie at all.

The common liar can be easily caught by clues his body expresses,
in form of twitching muscles, a slight variation of his tone,
a sudden but slight change of usual vocabulary, ......

... due to the conflict he creates between actual and makeup reality.

It is extremely easy to catch a liar, even in textform only!!

A liar twists reality to something it isn't,
while a roleplayer embraces a different reality.

Please note that catching a sociopath when he is lying is harder, (comparatively)
because sociopaths don't have that conflict at all.

That doesn't mean that all roleplayers are sociopaths, though.

Catching socikpaths is really easy, btw ... (if you know how)
... and it doesn't help them when they try to conceal it with the RP excuse.

Edit: changed some wording and stuff.

That's a VERY defensive message Cara. I can see there is more tension between roleplayers and non roleplayers in this game than in any game I have ever seen. I started roleplaying over 20 years ago in online games. (MUDs, yep!_) It takes a lot of skil lto roleplay, not everyone is going to be good at roleplaying alongside their gameplay. I do not have any problem with people who do not want to roleplay. It's HARD. So far I have not seen any conflicts between game mechanics and roleplay in Eve Online. the interfac is the capsule view, minus my hand and keyboard. The mouse and keyboard appear to be the only ooc elements unless of course this is simulated in the brain while in the capsule. I believe anyone can be good at Pvp with practice. I also think that RP and PVP go hand in hand. I have never had an experience where I could NOT pvp and rp at the same time. I used to wipe out people in Day of Defeat while roleplaying a crazy German Nazi over voice comms in German, when I don't even know German, I just picked up alot of swear words and horrible things to say from the German players (who were wonderful people by the way). I do not have the experience of not being able to roleplay and rock pvp and any other aspect of gameplay at the same time, in any game I have ever played. Maybe it is different for some other people, but that is not a reason to go OUT OF THE WAY to be a rude jerk to people who do not share such limitations. Talk about being a Carebear...defending nasty socially inept PVPers because they can't roleplay while they play is definately an example of being a Carebear. It takes a lot less energy to not roleplay than it does to troll OOC and be disruptive.

The trolling folks in militian chat certainly had time to post expletives and walls of nasty spam at me for about 15 minutes so I think it's more about being hateful bigots than "not having enough time". While I didn't intend for it to be about trolling, I can really have a fun time where I am a religious nut who consternates other hateful and bigoted players who insist on going out of their way to be earthlings, so I am not going to stop roleplaying in militia chat or any other chat, considering the opinions presented here.

Okay so one thing that confuses me about the intergalactic summit is a lot of people treat it like a text video chat...some of them treat it like a text chat, while others treat it like a sort of intergalactic emergency radio.

Like alot of you mentioned , I roleplay within game limitations, which means if my character is a fighter and soldier, I am going to be PvPing. If she is a bit of a wuss and a sneaky liar, like my avvie, she's going to just be studying social skills and not fighting unless cornered.

Similarily, if im getting text on my screen Im going to have my character assume it is text. (Im not playing a MUD here, after all) If I roleplay over voice (not quite ready for that) im not going to assume I can see the person if their sprite is not in front of me in th e Captain's quaters.

Im not into telling people how to roleplay so I dont mind very much but I need to kind of know how the established roleplay community is already treating the two roleplay channels. (contrary to my consternation filled intro, I do try to fit in with whatever is already going on) I would reason that text would be the communication of choice in space due to the huge distances signals have to be carried, and the high amount of data video or audio chat would require. If anyone's thought about these sort of things or know what the general consensus is I would love to hear about it. I also thought that maybe my ship computer is transliterating video actions into text somehow?

If all I know is the character, how can I tell if the player is acting strange? The conflict in the player's mind isn't expressed as they aren't expressing themselves at all - they are playing a role. If I accept the character without getting to know the player, I'm putting blind trust in someone I haven't met.

If the character is behaving slightly strange am I to assume it's a good liar or a bad roleplayer?

Maybe to you it seems superficial, but I believe most non-RPers will see it this way.

The task then for an RPer in EVE is to build trust while still developing interesting characters. I think it's more challenging in EVE because trust is so important in New Eden. And as Candi points out, not only do you need to build trust in yourself, but also in each of your characters. That's asking a lot from people who are less interested in role playing, and probably why RPers get a lot of backlash.

I do enjoy RP in the form of forum banter, corp chatting, blog posts, etc. However, OP asked why there is hate. I think the reasons I list explain a good bit of it.

True story, ahen I was a sad lonely 15 year old living in my grandmothers basement (Playing Gemstone III on AOL on a crappy IBM on a 14K connection) I once grabbed a banana in desperation for assistance with *ahem* release and it was a terrible mistake. They give you tiny splinters. Ugh....condoms first....
