Blue container in asteroid belt ?

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate if someone could shed some light on something that happened to me recently:

As I was mining in a 0.9 asteroid belt, I found a *blue* container full of ore. I carefully approached and grabbed all the ore (except for 1 item I left in. You know the fairy tale, always leave a bit in case it grows back or something). Free ISK ! Much happiness.

Now, in my readings, I found references to "jet can mining". Is that it ? But I find that weird to abandon the containers for anyone to loot. So was it a botched attempt by some newbie to do just that ? (BTW, the original owner was merrily mining in the next ore belt)

Or did I rudely invade the private space of some miner's corp for whom this is standard procedure ? Will I incur their endless wrath and retribution ? Will I get chased across the universe by a dozen mining barges heavily armed with electron blasters ? -the horror, the horror-

Anyhow, if someone can tell me if that's random luck or some standard pattern, I'd feel just a liiittle less puzzled by this strange universe.

In the meantime, happy new year to everyone !

If someone abandoned it (blue), you did nothing wrong. Why someone would abandon their ore can, I don't know, but maybe they just didn't have the time to haul it and felt like being nice and letting someone else get it.

Maybe he was having someone who wasn't in his fleet haul the ore? But if so, that's dumb, and you shouldn't feel bad.

How much and what kind of ore did you find in it?

OK, thanks, that's pretty much what I expected. I didn't even get a lot out of that, about ... let's 14k of concentrated scordite or something like that. Maybe something around 300k ISK. I assume that's barely pocket change for a normal player but for me (and I guess the guy who dropped it), that's at least one skillbook ! Rejoice ! It's still Christmas !! \o/

:)

Anyhow, I was just curious about the game mechanics, local customs, Right and Wrong, etc.

Thanks for clearing it out !

Probably this. Dual boxing and forgot to pick it up most likely. Good fortune for you. Big smile

Hard to explain this but your actions will have no game client enforced consequences and are extremely unlikely to be perceived as theft by other players (which might result in consequences not enforced by the client, like someone threatening to shoot your ships if you do not give them the ore).

Stealing ore is so much more fun than mining it.

Since you're new you most likely have your safety on, making it impossible to steal from a yellow can anyway, though can baiting in rookie systems is a bannable offence, so in that regard everything floating in noobie systems is free for all regardless if the container is abandoned or not.

It's only bannable if you're not a rookie.

Newbros are allowed mission flip and gank each other,
provided they are actually New the gms will let it slide for aa couple of days before telling them to take it out into eve propor.

Though it's worth nothing you can end up on someone's s***list fairly easily this way.

Game mechanics (hisec, outside rookie systems) ... when you did something,

- Did CONCORD take offence, and shoot you? No? Good - you haven't shot someone for "no reason".
- - If they did, then you broke the in-game "law" about 'no unprovoked combat', and are now considered a criminal (for 15 minutes). Once you have a GCC timer, just stay docked (or only fly in your capsule), because CONCORD will kill any ships you undock until the timer runs out.
- - - Did you kill the guy before CONCORD nuked you? No? Bring more DPS next time.

- Did you get a (yellow?) flag with a skull in it? No? Good - you haven't done anything that makes you a suspect character
- - If you did, then you did something that's "bad" (e.g. stole ore from a can), but you haven't overtly broken any "laws" (which would provoke CONCORD).

If you've got a yellow "suspect" timer, then you're able to be freely shot at by anyone (they won't get CONCORDOKKEN) for ~15 minutes. If you're looking for a fight, this can be a good thing.

Neither of the activities that warrant a GCC(criminal) or Suspect timer are any more "wrong" than enacting a "bad thing" on another player in a board game (e.g. wiping out one of their countries in Risk) . Note that getting these timers will possibly also raise the ire of the player(s) who you affected -- in which case, if they're mad about it they should be told to HTFU.

Remember -- killing is just a means of communication

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

Hi there! :D

If you rudely invaded some space others use,
then you were doing it right!

If you see jetcan miners, then take their stuff.

Ignore if it's blue or not, just have a safespot nearby, say a few thousand km away,
keep warping back and forth and drop everything in your own can.

Then, after your suspect timer runs out, (or just have balls and ignore it ;)
you can scoop it all up with a hauler.

It's easy money and if they jetcan mine they really have no excuse or reason not to blame themselves.
Not thag people are ever shy of **** to blame someone else, of course.

Oh and... always play fully zoomed out and get a feel for 3d space.

That way you know what's going on around you much better.

And many thanks again everyone for your advice, I am having a *really* good starting experience.

I regularly abandon containers with ore in them.

When i'm mining with my Orca/Hulk/Hulk sometimes you just run out of room to pick it up.

So if I can't be bothered to go back it just gets turned blue Smile

Take and enjoy..happy new year.

Yeah, CCP has used the pilot suits for some of their other videos too... they're pretty awesome.

You should plan to watch Fanfest (it's in March, IIRC -- devblogs, etc. will be forthcoming) -- it's a great set of presentations by CCP and players, and (if you ever get a chance to go to Reykjavik) pub crawls and partying...

There are a few reasons for the blue can.
Once is reverse baiting. Someone was just hoping to have it flipped so the baiter goes suspect.

Someone just acting as bait for some reason... maybe they have a war dec and was hoping a war target would see them. They have no interest in the ore so they left it and abandoned it.

Orca filled up and that was the last can so they just left it for whoever.

I just want to clarify here because I'm not sure if you are joking or serious. Those "gangsta rappers" are the developers of Eve and CEO of CCP. I figure you got that but just in case you did not yes the CEO of CCP just told you to quit being a pussy and harden the **** up
