Yes, I understand what EVE is. It's perfectly nice to like the game.

It doesn't make one a higher class of gamer to like unstructured games over competitive ones, which is a sentiment I see repeatedly in this post and elsewhere on the site.

You have it backwards. NO ONE chest thumps louder than 'solo' PVPrs (in this game or any game). I mean, some of them are so full of themselves because of their prowess in making other people's ships explode they make this guy look like he's not an arrogant jerk who hogs the ball (lol). The truth is, nothing any of us does in a video game amounts to a hill of beans and everyone knows that...execpt some solo pvprs...and Kobe Bryant Twisted

On the front page of this site, I don't see any posts that are chest thumping solo PvPers saying really anything at all.

I do see a lot of posts containing chiefly self-congratulatory messaging among EVE veterans for, well, just being EVE veterans.

As someone trying to get a feel for what the EVE community is like, I have to say this site does not present it in a favorable light.

I can't wait until I reach 100M SP so I can be AFK in Manfred Sideous' wrecking ball. Then the real pvp can finally start for me.

I blame TV and all those Rambo and Gladiator style movies. In real life even the best solo "gladiator" tended to do poorly aka die when outnumbered by as few as 2 simple badly trained conscript soldiers with pointy sticks lol.

Nah its Deathmatch FPS and LOL style gaming where teams are even and access to weapons is "fair".

The antithesis of survival.

Or, you know, chess, tennis, or any other competitive endeavor that our society actually places value on because they are measures of acute skill, talent, and training, instead of a mere willingness to throw an inordinate amount of time at assembling a gang in an online game.

Your society.

Sports are measures of natural ability over trained skill, and actively remove any freedom of thought from the so-called competition.

In short, sports are games for the weak-minded.

"assembling a gang in an online game" has nothing to do with survival, or even what we are talking about.

Go back to your TV, sportsfan.

The sheer scope of the PvP is what draws so many in. Most other games have PvP in an arena of some varying description with few consequences, and (this is key) few variables. EVE PvP is very similar to actual strategy in real conflicts, obviously not in impact, it is still a game; but the freedom and creativity EVE PvP allows is absolutely amazing. You're not plopped down in front of an opponent in honorable 1v1 (or 2v2, 4v4 whatever) space bushido combat in an arena. You have a galaxy full of people, resources, and geography to use and exploit against whoever is, or will be, blinking red on your overview.

In other PVP games, you employ tactics. EVE gives you the freedom to strategize.

Also, there's exploding spaceships. That's cool too.

Grrr.

Im probably exaggerating in my above statement.

But can you show me a sportsman with something useful or interesting to say?

Hulk Hogan created the whole business by himself and that would have never worked without talking.
You can not deny that, at all. Without Hulks Hogan charisma and micskills there wouldn't be this

CM Punks shoot promos are legendary. This guy is a master on the microphone
and when he talks people always listen, because he always has something to say
and usually it's straight honest, even against his own company or boss.

Don't forget ... wrestling is still a sport. If you don't believe that,
I suggest letting yourself get dropped, thrown around and smacked a few times.

Most people here are weaklings ... I would love to see them go through a bit of pain ...
... just to laugh at them for being tough guys on the internet.

This sounds like the excuses and rationalization of someone who didn't make the team or watched too many cliche movies about jocks and nerds.

Anyone who's been a contributing member of a decent high school athletics program would find your claims not only wrong but mildly offensive.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

The somewhat lower-risk way that I took once I realized that the run-all-the-things, cap-stable mission fits I'd be using were doing me more harm than good was to outfit a cap-injected, active-tanked, MWD, drone-launching neutron blaster Brutix and take it into L3s.

You lost me at "missions"

In that case, I'd go with Schmata Bastanold's advice: start with a simple, passive ship and scale up as you get more comfortable.

Oh, and you'll always forget to launch drones. I've forgotten to do that while piloting drone boats--not that I claim any mastery of PVP at all. I'm still pretty bad.

But as a professional musician told me, what makes a pro is not whether you make mistakes, but how you recover from them. You'll always make mistakes. It's helped me to laugh at them.

Most will never grasp the concepts involved. And id be willing to be 99% of the posters on this thread are doormats. The thing about EVE is most people never really get good at it. They either get more numbers and blob you, or they use a cookie cutter fit that occasionally works. Once you figure out the game though its pretty easy, you just must aspire to do so and not fall into the cookie cutter trap. As it stands its IMPOSSIBLE for me to lose in a 1v1 fight with cruiser sized hulls and below. If anyone wants to challenge this I accept all comers and will have it FRAPSed and posted for all to see how easy people are in this game.

My only sport now is getting into fights that are usually 10 v 1.

The thing to take away from this is learn the game. Don't follow the same cookie cutter crap everyone tells you that you have to do because thats just what it is crap.

Also if you'd like to learn from the best we have a corp in our alliance for aspiring pvpers such as yourself, where you will be able to learn proper gameplay and tactics. Not just the run of the mill "im a PVP god" because i have x amount of logi or im in a blob mentality the rest seem to have.

I hear ya loud and clear, I don't understand what happens to me though when I engage someone. My mind behaves differently. I know I have to keep range and be within a certain distance but I experience some sort of mental block caused by adrenaline??? I don't know I just need to fight through it, and remember to fire all the things, overheat all the things, keep in range all the things and watch my own shields and armor always... I'm still not flying with reflex gut feelings, it's still very much a "remember you need to do A before you do B" instead of just instinctively knowing to do it.

I use to forget to launch drones before when I engaged someone, is that typical?

Say it out loud to yourself as you warp in. Run through the list:

"Damage control and hardeners on, loading EM rockets, target range is 6000 meters" etc.

Ever wonder why FCs say these things? It helps bring the focus back to what you are doing instead of the jitters. It's not because pilots can't remember to turn on their own damage control (usually).

I learned today that I am not good at PVP. No, actually I'm terrible at it. I don't understand the mechanics, it's difficult to watch modules, distance to ship and overall the GUI is pretty difficult for a beginner pvp pilot. Did I launch drones? Is the ship in range? Did I overheat my module? Did I stop overheating? Too many variables to keep track and in too many places and it moves so fast I forget what I'm doing!

I even had a decent fit and I still can't take down a simple destroyer hull. I got close, but I didn't notice he flew outside my rocket range because I was watching the hull.... bleh. How do you do it? Congrats to those with the patience to learn this, I think I prefer shooters and aiming with a mouse.

PvP solo is like playing eve on Ultra Difficult. Don't do it! Join a fleet. I do better in fleets.
