Multiple Character and Alts

I'm thinking of using all three of my character slots to create pilots from a different race. But I was wondering: given how in-depth this game is (and thus the potential for it to be time consuming) it is realistic, time wise, to have three (possibly more) characters? Would my time be better used focusing on the advancement of a single pilot? Any input would be appreciated.

My vote for a new player is single toon for sure!

Single character.

Race affects your appearance, your starting skills (weapon and frigate) and your NPC corps and that's it. There's no point in having a character of an other race just to have a character of another race.

Bear in mind, without spending extra, you can only train one character per account.

There will come a time, maybe months or years away, where you realise you need more characters. I really do not think new players need to worry about it. Learn the game, find people and a Corp that matches you, enjoy EVE.

Better to have 3 accounts and 1 toon for each race so you can skill 3 toons at once.

I have 2 accounts. I did that so I can have a hauler. Thats a lot to manage. I no longer mine as much to justify it, although still fun to have that alt. The other 4 alts on both accounts are great for PI once skilled high enough. But still a lot to manage.

Focusing a toon on one goal, can be an extremely lethal toon.

what would you use the other character for?

Figure that out before looking at getting another account.

Remember, one toon can fly all ships and shoot all gunz!

Okay.

First, why would you make 3 characters of different races?

If it is so you can fly multiple races, you can do that from 1 character too.
Specially, cause if you don't throw 2 more PLEX a month onto the account, you can only train 1 character by default.
Then there is the issue, you can only log in 1 character / account. So if you want to use all 3 at the same time, you have to go for 3 accounts.

If you have nothing that you MUST use an alt for or you have no clear plan that says "I'm going to do this with this alt so that it supplement my gameplay" > You do not need an alt.

Stick with 1 character. The game is already hard enough to learn as a new player, using 3 different characters only makes it harder.

3 to start with, when you are new to the game? No. Eventually when you know why and how yes, 3 can be very useful. Be they on one account or several.

That being said, within reason, Eve favors and rewards early focus and some degree of specialization. Which can be a bit of a catch if you don't know what you really like, or really want to do yet. Still, as a general rule, focus is important. Spread yourself too thin or redundantly and you can easily set yourself back more than ahead.

Mild suggestion: Run with 1 character as you get to know eve. Make 2 alts. Never train them until you need a second character slot. Place the 2 alts in two trade hubs.

Jita, Amarr, Rens or Dodixie.

Perhaps Jita and a second that's most convenient/closer to you for where you are living.

--

Note: The reason to place the two alts in the trade hubs is that you can have an idea of what fair prices for various items are and make logistical choices based on trade hub averages and values that the Alts can get you access to regardless of where your main is normally living.

Race makes no difference anymore. In fact my main started Amarr but missions in a Rattlesnake and a Domi and spends a lot of time in Claws, Vexors, Viators, the Wolf, a Mastodon and even a Drake occasionally. He almost never flies an Amarr ship.

Their is one very slight advantage in that you could try out the various schools. Some school corp chats and local are like ghost towns, some are full of people deliberately trying to bait new characters into duels and scamming and others actually have a helpful community (University of Caille at Trossere is one of the better ones). But even then once you found a good school stick with that character.

It takes years to skill a good main. Do not waste your time skilling 3 at the same time on 1 account. At perfect efficiency you receive 23.652.000 SP/year. This means that elusive fully trained character is at minimum 20 years away and CCP keeps adding skills.
Focus on 1 main that will do your favourite activities well. At some point you might feel you need more accounts. You can skill or buy more then.

Reopen the EVE gate so we can invade Serenity. Goons can go first.

If you look at the other 2 alts on the same account as your main, as your go-fer's - that becomes a contribution to the excellence you can achieve with that main. They are the subordinates.

I have 3 mains because I couldn't make up my mind. So I have 3 dysfunctional mains. Which is ok, because it totally makes sense for me.

Unfortunately the older I get, the more I need to pay attention to what I am doing and what other people are doing. Too expensive to lose my pod these days.

Learning to focus a main towards a major goal can once again, be very lethal.

Main reason to have multiple characters on a single account are:
- Planetary interaction
- Possible scouts when you cannot fly with your main
- Super carrier sitters for an another account

Two of thsoe require you to train the secondary characters, but if you use the MCT service for a month you can get a nice amount of planets pushing out PI goodies for extra income even on a single account.

You are asking if you should do this and don't even give a reason why you would want to do this. It seems to me that you have answered your own question.

This. Exactly. Perfectly executed.
